SMLE No1 MkIII with DP marking on stock

No swiss cheese holes in mine...

I will bring it to the gunsmith tomorrow evening. I also notice that the "DP" stock is a good 1" shorter than my other Lee Enfields (I have 3 so far).

I am going to order some SR4759 powder and am looking for a good .314 mold - but want to say light - say 160gr for plinking purposes. I might have to order a custom one from LBTmoulds.com in the US and size accordingly (.313, .314, etc.).

I was also thinking that I might try out some Duracoat on one of them. This seems to be easier than any sort of re-bluing.

If you want light loads with cast bullets, try the C.E. Harris UNIVERSAL load: 13 grains of Red Dot with a CAST 180. It gets about 1800 ft/sec. Buffdog uses them for sniping gophers out to 150 or so. Gets about 2 MOA, can be better in some rifles. Not much recoil, relatively quiet..... and 538 loads to the tin of powder!

Harris determined that this load can be used with MOST fullsized military rifles and obtain similar results. There are people out there using it with everything from 6.5 Swede and upwards. Pressures are very much on the moderate sie. Cheap plinking load and accurate enough that you can beat out a lot of surplus ammo with it..... and still not hurt your shoulder.

BTW, if your RIFLE is shorter than the others, the BUTT is the reason, most likely. SMLE butts were issued in 4 lengths, stamped on top of the butt at the plate end: LONG, normal, SHORT and BANTAM, marked as L, S and B generally, the NORMALs generally being unmarked. They all interchange, of course. Number 4 butts were isued in the same 4 lengths but with 2 EXTRA lengths: XL and XXL, which are pretty much self-explanatory. Ech rifle, on issue, was fitted to the man using it, but there could be exceptions. I take a NORMAL, for example, but shoot my best with a SHORT.

Hope this helps.
