The manufacturers state a shelf life in excess of one year when stored in a cool, dry environment.
In practice, you will find those wire pulls are irresistible and they won't last long

You can hold them. In my experience, they are not KNO3-based. I know - I set my kitchen on fire as a teenager with that stuff... Subject matter expert.

The Sport Smoke brand do get hot, but I believe the Enola ###e brand does not. I will try and confirm this
