Well, I did something yesterday I have not done in about thirty-five years. I bought a brand spankin' new gun, from a gun shop. It was an easy sell, though, since I had just found out about the Savage Model 10ML II two days before and decided I would buy one, sight unseen.

This muzzle-loader uses SMOKELESS POWDER!!!!! No more cleaning after two shots, and black corrosive powder all over everything, sulphur smell, etc etc. The recommended cleaning frequency is after FIFTY shots, yeehaw!!!!

It is an in-line gun, with a bolt that looks and feels like a standard rifle bolt, a regular safety, the Accu-trigger, and comes with a bore-sighted scope. Not a Burris by any means, but a Simmons which appears to be functional. It uses the 209 shotgun primers, which fit into a bracket on the bolt face, and shoots .50 cal saboted bullets. Powder is IMR SR 4759, with which I have no previous experience (apparently a magnum pistol powder), and is measured volumetrically with a powder dipper and a handy-dandy little "test tube" ready to open and pour the powder down the barrel.

No range report yet, but they are apparently a very accurate rifle and I would be highly surprised if I find anything other than that.

Goodbye black powder, hello 21st century!

Gun Mart at Tincap, north of Brockville. Brian is a good guy to deal with. Yesterday he had four models in stock:

a camo version
a laminate-stocked version (BEAUTIFUL)
a stainless/synthetic version
a blued/synthetic version.

The last one is the only one that comes with a scope. The others have Tru-Glo type fiber optic sights. The scoped one is $659, and the others are more money.

Thompson makes one too????

This one had the distinct advantage of being where I was at the same time and in the same place, and me with a hankerin' for it...........

Back to SC, nope I have three tags left, one for the controlled hunt (shotguns) this coming week and two for the Muzzle Loader and archery seasons in the area of my hunt camp. If we don't tag out this coming week, I still have until 31 Dec to fill those tags with the bow.

Back to senior, that is my Santa Doug avatar, it is that time of year - which reminds me, I gotta get Santa Doug's Christmas Gun Sale going...... OH! Looky here, a pre-'64 Model 70 in .264 Win Mag, yes that looks like it will be the featured model......

Now if this blasted rain (20-30 mm predicted) and wind (30 gusting to 50)would stop!!!!!!! I could get out and shoot this baby........

All the best on that SG hunt next week. Don't forget the camera and the Challengers. :p

You birds are lucky to get more than one tag. :(

.

I too have 3 tags to fill, but all for muzzleloader/archery. Hoping to get a few next week. The property I'm going to hunt had 26 different deer on it on the opening of rifle season, and no pressure on them.:D

Doug, do you think the shotgun primer will be hot enough for the smokeless?? What is a typical load for that gun ??

No Challenger slugs will ever pass through any gun that I own...........as you undoubtedly recollect, SC!

Yes the multiple tags are great, I could have had upto 7, but only had 5. If we really luck out up at Camp Swampy, there were still extra tags available as of early this week, so our gang could "potentially" buy up to another 13 tags..........

back to blargon, yes indeed the shotgun primer is good. With the 250 gr Hornady XTPs (in sabots) and 43 gr of SR 4759, they are reporting 2330 fps and over 3000 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle. Good numbers if they are true....

Good catch Doug! That is really fascinating...I hadn't heard about these "Smokeless Smokepoles" before.

Let me know if you have any trouble finding SR4759 locally...I "stumbled" onto a few pounds of this propellant last year really cheap. I could send you one for Christmas, to get you started with your new Musket. :)

By the way, I quite like your Avatar.

Shoulda bought the Thompson....:p

Never mind him Doug, you know who makes the best rifles.;)

Wish I could be there next week, sorry I'll miss it but put down a nice 8 pointer for me with it.:)

Can't believe you bought a "new" gun! At least you got a new box with it so you can stuff the next gun you send to me in it loaded full of your long underwear and wool socks!:dancingbanana:

Doug

If you havent done so plse google randywakeman.com.....
He has tons of info/and load data on your Savage smokeless M/Loader to get you started.....

hs4570 .........your mileage may vary

Randy is a mod over at Savage Shooters.net with me to Doug, good guy.

Lots of info on those guns in the muzzle loader forum over there to if you need any info on something.

Very good link indeed, and some of it expressly NOT in the owner's manual, such as suggested accuracy loads with SR 4759........

Here is a "hot button" if anybody else wants to follow it:

Now if we can get this rain and wind over and done with......!!!!!! :-(

Doug

I meant sorry about your luck with the deer tags...:)
Nothing against the Savage M/L's they are the only smokeless powder M/L!
The T/C M/L'S are black powder and Black powder substitutes only.:(
I am a Thompson Center fan and the razz was intended in good humor!;)
Good luck with your M/L hunt..

Thanks Redd. I had never heard of a smokeless front-stuffer before about three days ago (swamp told me), and so it was entirely possible that more than one gun maker had them...........

.......and "EVERYBODY" says the Thompson Centres are the best guns out there. But if they burn that black poop I ain't interested!!!

The rain has now tapered off to a steady drizzle, ditches are full to overflowing, culverts are past springtime flood levels!!! But hopefully tomorrow I can get this new gun out for its inaugural shoot!
