I have been using Win231 as my choice for my .45 acp .However when I was shooting this past weekend I noticed that when I fired there was a larger than normal cloud of heavy smoke . Not BP heavy but near enough to almost make a follow up shot difficult .
This powder is a couple years old as I bought a couple pounds at the same time ,it has been properly stored and I am about 1/3 way down the canister without this happening before

Has this happened to anyone else or can someone shed a light on this for me ??

231 is a dirty powder and gets dirtier with lead bullets.

It's still a good powder though.

RePete.

Ditto on that. I use it for 9 mm and .45 and it is good, but hardly worthy of the title "smokeless".

Generally, powders burn dirtier at low pressures - might be a sign that your loads are on the light side, or that the powder is on the slow side for your particular application

Given that he says he's used it before without problem, I suspect that the issues might be more than just the innate 'dirtiness' of the powder

Need a little more information.

Were cast bullets being used? and if so, was there a change in the bullets? Could be that the lube was changed or there was more lube left on the base of cast bullets.

Did the load change? Have you weighed the powder charges? Take a bullet apart and weight the charge to see if it is lighter than what you were using before.

Those would be the main things to look at.

Hey SandRoad,
Yes I was using cast bullets but iti s the same alloy I have always used , I did use Lee's Alox lube but this is the second time and never noticed it before.

This particular load has been my standard for the last couple years so I have not had this problen before
