Smoorhbore Slug Accuracy – 50m or 100m

I thought it might be fun to start a thread for rifled slug accuracy … and to share what combinations of gun/slugs seem to work.

And to back up our achievements …. lets post a picture of the groupings…. :)

Who is in?

If you are in, please post a picture of your group and with the following information:

  • Shotgun / Model / Make: (Example: Rem 870 Police)
  • Caliber: (Example: 12ga)
  • Barrel: (Example: Hastings Cantilever barrel, 24”, 3”)
  • Choke: (Example: Fixed IC)
  • Ammo / Slug: (Example: Federal Truball, 2 ¾")
  • Distance: (Example: 100 meters)
  • Sighting system: (Example: Scope XYZ 4x44)
  • Shots fired: (Example: 5)

We are all here to learn … and this might be a fun way to learn what gun/slug combinations seem to work.

Note: This thread is for rifled slugs and which are shot out of a smoothbore shotgun only! Sabots shot out of a rifled barrel do not count here. If you want to post your results out of a rifled barrel, I suggest to open a separate thread for rifled barrels.

Pretty fancy looking shotgun just to shot a few slugs at a deer. Many years back I played with reloading slugs. Foster type. never really achieved anything exceptional in accuracy over factory foster type loads. That was long before specialized slug guns and barrels came out. I made my own slug barrel for my Win SX-1 by shortening at 30" barrel down to 18" removing the vent rib and soldiering on a set of Remington rifle sights as they were one of the few sights that were not aluminum. With the right flux 50/50 standard plumbing soldier did the trick. Cold blued the whole barrel. She works like a charm. I fashioned a removable raised stock comb out of card board and black duct tape, it does not look as bad as it sounds and does the trick nicely. I can consistently get the type of accuracy you have pictured at 50 yds with Winchester foster type slugs. At 100 yds the groups open up to about 6". I did all this in and around the late 70's. The whole set up has worked fine over the years. My eyes no longer get along with open sights so it has not seen much use in recent years.
I have seen many fellas at the range over the years with standard 30" full choke plain barrel shotguns plunk 3 shots into a metal pie plate at 100 yds. That is with in minute of deer for hunting purposes. I have never played with sabot slugs or the Brenneke type of slug, never found the need as what I had worked well. Sorry can't do pictures, don't have the equipment.

You set the bar too high!
Good shooting.

Thanks Londonshooter.

I agree …. TruBall and Hastings worked well together there.

I tried the same thing with Mr. Estate and Mr. Hastings …. But that did not work out so well …. despite the fact that Estate and TruBall have identical skill sets … they are identical slugs … and with the same velocity ... and probably coming out of the same Federal factory. However, with one little difference …. a tiny plastic ball!!!

What difference a tiny plastic ball can make!

Here the group I got with Estate 1oz slugs:

Federal Trueball is the tightest lead slugs I have tried and use with an old Remington single shot 12 gauge, and an old S&W 3000 police 18.5 inch barrel bead, bar none. Targets? Sorry I'm old and dont keep them, and have shot several critters ....
Federal Trueball, worth the expensive when you want that 50M one holer......

I've done this years ago and unlikely have pictures that I could find. My conclusion was to try many different brands to see what shoots the best in that particular shotgun. Just because it works great in one shotgun does not mean it works great in all shotguns. Each gun tends to have its own preference, and you don't know until you try it.

My Benelli M4 with Rem 7/8 ounces rifled slugs 3 inch at 1900 fps of the sand bags, Aimpoint red dot. Here is a group from 70 yards from the picknic table at the farm. Choke is IC.

The Benelli M4 is an impressive shotgun.

Since Phtobucket held everyone's pics hostage I haven't learned to use any other provider.I shoot a 20" smoothbore Ithaca 37 Deerslayer deluxe that loves Brenneke slugs.Cloverleaves at 50 yards. Grizzly relaxer for hiking.
