How far would you shoot at a deer with rifled slugs in a smooth bore 22" barrel? My guess would be about 65-75 yards. What do you guys think?

Dave.

All depends on the accuracy. That distance is fine as far as energy, assuming 20/12ga.

I'd stay around 50 yards and under if the barrel had open sights, and hunting deer size game in the bush.

If the deer were out in the open, 75 yards would be fine as long as you had practised and know how your gun shoots.

However, adding a small scope of about 4 power, a slug gun can take big game efficiently at 100 yards.

Assuming it has sights that are better then a simple bead, I'd go as far as the guns accuracy would allow me to consistantly put the slug where it has to go. Even regular old rifled slugs should have enough energy left to kill at 100 yards if the gun can put them where they need to be.

Accuracy is the bigest issue. Practice. When you reach the distance that you can no longer hit a "kill zone", back it off a touch and that's your range.
