I am going to try out some of my smoothbore shotguns with ordinary rifled slugs. All guns are smoothbore, with bead sights. I will shoot off a bench at 50 yards.

I don't know what the average gone will do, so don't know how I will rate my results. I am inclined to think that if it groups 3 shots under 4", that is good.

Also need to identify the guns that shoot to point of aim.

Have you shot rifled slugs at 50 yards, with a bead sight?

Out of my Benelli M4 7/8 ounce Rem 3 inch, got 4 inch @ 70 yards with modified choke... JP.

Thanks. And this also conforms I should be testing at 50 yards, not 25.

Test will involve something in the order of 8 guns. Most are bobbed barrels with no choke. Slugs are old CIL Poly-Kor. I am guessing about 30 years old. Canadian Tire price tag $1.79

I will also try some cut shells and simple handloaded slugs.

All I ever used to use was the cheap Winchester rifled slugs and they always gave good results. I now have a rifled barrel for better accuracy and longer range but it was very common to get deer at 100 yards with the smoothbores.

wow if i ever got my hands on old slugs like that id leave them that way i have over 500 hulls that type right there pretty strong hulls

An open Cyclinder 26" barrel with two beads on a Remington 870. 3 shots at 50 yards 3" low and right. Anyone hit with one of those puppies would not recognize any lack of acuracy.

Remington 870 express with a 20" rifle sighted smoothbore will shoot cheap Winchester 1 oz slugs inside 4" @ 100 yards. Accuracy was quite acceptable I thought. More expensive slugs didn't do any better.

years ago I gathered almost every Rifled slug I could find for testing on smooth bore shotguns. I removed the slug from each and dropped them down my 20" Remington 870 smooth bore 12 gauge barrel (not sure of choke but I think improved cylinder) Every slug fell through the barrel except the Winchester Western 1ounce. It stopped just short of the muzzle. My shotgun was equipped with a scope. I went to the range with all of the slugs for testing. At 50 yards I could shoot 1 1/2 inch groups with the Winchesters but none of the others came close. I can't remember all of the slugs tested, but there were about six makes. At 100yds, it would shoot about 4" with the Winchesters and nothing else came close. I now shoot an 870 rifled barrel with Hornady SST's, and they have rifle qualities out to 150 yards
