If you're going to insert a magazine on a closed bolt you need to give it a good smack to make sure it's locked in. I usually lock the bolt back then insert a magazine and then drop the bolt using the bolt release. I typically only use the charging handle once per day since I leave it locked open when not shooting.
LAR mags are also hit and miss when it comes to reliability, some guys have no issues and others can't get them to function reliably.
I've never seen any reason to use snap caps, you won't hurt anything dry firing without them and if I want to have some test rounds I make blank loads (I'm a handloader). You can't trust a plastic replica to tell you if there is something wrong with your rifle.
