Snaring Black bear

You can get by as a trapper. But the glory days are gone, probably forever.
As said above, you need to take a course, and get a license to be effective as a trapper. Really, apprenticing under an established trapper is the best way. The tricks that these guys have are truly amazing. Like a trade job, it's experience that makes you good.
No, you don't have to quit your job, but, trapping properly, and legally, requires a lot of time, so, if your job was something like farming, where you can set your own hours to a degree, you'd be better off.
You must check your trap line very often.

I just finished my trappers course and testing yesterday. You will have to take a course, I am not sure about the process to get registered out there as I am in Ontario. The only way you will make enough money trapping to make it worth it is by nuisance trapping. The course itself is generally focused on safety and ethics with regards to humane killing.

I know three trappers. None of them use trapping as their primary means of income. The trapping just basically pays for itself, and lets them enjoy the outdoors and a pasttime that they love, without breaking the bank.

I was thinking of getting into trapping myself. I love snowshoeing and would like to start snaring 'yotes to bring the numbers down in my hunting area. I don't plan on making any money from it, just recreation.

Thanks guys, I don't want to trap for a living but I do have the time to check them very often, I'm not looking to make money at it.

Good stuff....you are both being realistic,LOL.Seriously though...there's no money in it these days....not that there ever was,but in the 70s-80s a fella could do OK.Trapper #s in NB are 1/4 of what they were 30 years ago, traps cost 3x as much, fuel 5x as much, and fur is worth the same or less in most cases than it was 30 years ago.....back when a hundred bucks was a hundred bucks. To compare a $50 beaver or $10 muskrat in 1980 should bring about $200 and $40 respectively these days to earn the same kinda money.....sadly they still only fetch $40 and $10.:jerkit:

get ready to write, when i did mine in N.S. we had a 100 questions homework to do prior to the course. for your course, you will start early and finish late, they nomaly do them on a saterday.
