Snaring hares pics

I snare alot of white rabbts each winter. I bet 30% are waiting for me to show up. They don't choke out, just sit there waiting. This only applies if a Lynx doesn't find them first. I use brass rabbit snare wire 3.5" loop about 4" off of the ground (snow) Works OK for me.

cheers Darryl

Darryl, try setting your snares lower, you'll get twice as many rabbits, 4" seems to high, I just run them about 2" off the ground cause when bunnies are running on a rabbit run they have their heads down lower to the ground.

And Riley, how can a guitar string work? It won't kink, thats the whole trick to the brass wire snares, as they tighten they kink and lock so it chokes them, a guitar string will just go back to the same shape as soon as there was a let off on pressure, kind of a morbid way to go. Remember "quick and humane".

A few pointers,
Be aware of the moon :D glare of the wire will make 'em go round.
Get the snare setup under a softwood canopy (on a trail, lol) if possable.

You can funnel the rabbit , ie, stick up small twigs either side, and under , can even extend the side stick out into an opening v, not carried away here, just make the easy route throught the snare.

If your only option is out in the open alder , you can take small curved twigs that will mask the wire, but don't have it so the twigs get caught inside the snare when it closes.

If you tie the snare to an alder, make it 3 or 4 ft long , and fresh, not dry dead wood.(can use the same lumber all season, makes picking up your snares a snap)

Don't step into trails, but to the side.

if you want to consentrate the rabbits to a certain area, drop a couple birch trees (food)

Watch the weather, as a snow fall will mess your sets. (check every day)

Best to make a circuit through the woods , better than in and back out, twice the area coverage.

Use the copper wire , its cheap, can get a bunch of snares from one rool.

Take a hatchet / 22 rimfire with you if you can.

ETC......:D
Good call MD, don't want the rabbit to go over (crossed up evergreen branches if required) or under (2 inches off the deck with a couple small twigs to keep the snare from turning).

Interesting thread. I have never hunted this way. I looked it up in the Ontario hunting regs and found the following:

Snares cannot be used, except by licenced hunters taking varying hares north of the French and Mattawa rivers with a snare constructed of brass or copper wire between 22 and 24 gauge. The opening of the snare wire loop must be 10 cm (4 inches) or less. Licensed trappers may used snares under conditions as specified in the regulations.

pouts sadly i don't have my PAL yet or i would be out there

i heard on here that the hides are worthless i just want it for making fur puch bag es and stuff like that for a few fiends who do tarot cards and maybe an oghm(stics with inscirptions similar to rune stones but is of a irish celtic origen rather then norse) for a good friend of mine who is irish celtic would the fur work for this purpose not like it would be used to hold wieght or any thing like a knife sheath?

In Alberta:

By residents for rabbit or hare on lands to which they have right-of-access (provided the snare wire is not larger than 20-gauge and the snare loop is not more than 13 cm (5 in.) in diameter).

Great Tips Levi.
I also normally use a trick I learned while snaring foxes and coyotes and that is to put a tiny stick just under the snare and sticking straight up so that it stops just under the bottom of the loop. The rabbit, yote, fox whatever generally move with their nose to the ground and when they encounter this stick they lift their heads slightly -- right into the loop. Checked this morning and had 2 gut piles waiting and 4 ravens chortling in the trees waiting for the next feeding. Closed up all the loops and will reset them when I get back from Edmonton on Sunday.

Great thread! Brings back memories of going out with my dad in snowshoes when I was a little guy (40 os so years ago...). Man we had some good times!

We used to set the snares and walk around the bush for a while looking for grouse that were buried in snow. Nothing quite as funny as stepping on a grouse snow mound and watch the head pop up through the snowshoes gut string. One swift kick and voila! Grouse dinner. Try that with them new fangled snowshoes...

What a great thread -- It seems that this one brings back some really fond memories for many of us. Winters in Fort McMurray, so many years ago...

For what it's worth, I agree that the shine on brass or stainless wire can be a problem. Back in the day, I tried "smoking" the wire with a match until it was black once the snare was set up, and it definitely seemed to help.

Great topic! Burning birch bark works well to blacken wire. Also, an "x" out of dry sticks put under the snare helps guide their head into it.

Is it legal to snare snowshoe hare in BC?

Attach/anchor your snares higher off the ground and you'll find more dead rabbits...it puts pressure on them when they relax (hanging themselves). If you anchor at their head height or lower, when they relax the pressure on the snare is reduced.

I've snared coyotes/wolves, and anchor the snares 4'+ off the ground... never had a live one once I began doing it this way. I used this same principle for Hare and it works great!

One large ##### Wolf I snared never even kinked the wire... lights out!

Try it... it means using a longer snare, but the results are more humane.

The hide is super thin but I like the rabbit pie better than the fur anyway.

Over the years I have fleshed some and tanned them but in general the boys and I go out for a feed.

As far as the PAL goes, you don't need one to snare. Take a hockey stick with you to check the snares or a your best walking stick or an axe or a machete or, or ........... just some protection.

If a coyote or wolf happens to be there, doesn't matter really, you ain't getttin it back anyway.;)

Dad always taught me to soak snare wire in water for a couple of days to darken it up so it would not reflect under a full moon. Been a long time since I've set snares. Used to set 20-30 and check them early morning before going to school......good ol' days.....

Well we had some success this wknd up in Conn Ont. at my roomates cabin.
We set up 20 or so snares with a snare=2, Rabbit=18 ratio lol:D
Needless to say we had a great time getting away from Borden:dancingbanana: for a couple'a days:)
I think that if we to overlap the snares we'd have a better suucess, but we still ate good;)
Cheers,

I really wish we could snare in 63A in teh Ottawa valley, only other way to get a snowshoe without a dog is to sit and wait.

63a thats near centenial lake i think thats where my cottage is i want a dog a friend of mine has a sorce for this breed that is breed speciicaly for hunting and they had this dog for a few weeks and it's allready responded to several commands such as sit lay down come heal as well as no i am thinking about getting one cause they are supposed to be able to climb trees cause they are bread for coon hunting
