Well… she obviously looks like one… but I am now just a bit confused.

Over the years, many ‘experts’ have told me exactly what type she is… and have put forth:

1) Artillery Carbine
2) Cadet Carbine
3) Cavalry Carbine
4) Canadian Militia ‘cut-down’ rifle
5) Bubba Special ( I seriously doubt that… but who knows…)

Anyways… Due Dilligance on my part behooves me to properly identify her...whatever she truly may be.

Guy who sold it to me said she was an Artillery Carbine… rambled on about sights and little screws... gave me a headache. Close second is always Cadet Carbine.

Hope my fellow CGN’ers can help identify her properly, once and for all.

Perhaps even put a Regiment or Militia Unit to the numbers on the tang, now THAT would be nice! [Pics to follow]

DC marked so I know she was in Canadian Service at some point in her life…

Thanks to all for your help !

cadet carbine is a cut down ,has front bead /shotgun type sight and trigger guard has a hole in the front of the guard for sling swivel and a plugged hole in the stock where ramrod went through .Yours has barley corn front sight ,no hole ,short rear sight and side screws for the mule knee sight cover ,and appears to be a mk111 so a calvary carbine is what it looks like to me

Cavalry carbine issued to 7th Batt of Infantry London ON. Until 1875 infantry battalions had a cavalry troop.

Thank you Gentlemen! There we have it... after all these years. An 1871 Cavalry Carbine.

And yes... has a trap door in the brass buttplate... nothing inside though.

Probably a light struck III ... although at first blush it looks like only a II ...

IMG_1773.JPG

Also...no clearing rod, nor any place for one.

And extra thanks for identifying the unit markings.... London, Ontario Infantry always meant RCR back my day... wonder if they perpetuate the 7th Bn.

All in all a good show, lads! Again... my thanks.

Can you post an image of the lock plate, showing the markings stamped into it, and a better image of the roundel on the stock that more clearly shows the markings? I'm collecting some data on these carbines and want to confirm something about yours. Thanks.

Tac ... yes...and frigging annoying isn't it? They display just fine on my desktop but when I upload them, it's CGN that 'flips' the ba$tards!! wtf??

Rover ... my pleasure... here are some more. ( Curious why the "Steel" marking... I mean really, lads... it's hardly bamboo or cast aluminum, is it? )

Thanks Chofo. That provides the information I was looking for. I'm kind-of/sort-of, cataloguing "Canadian" cavalry carbines like yours that are I-broad arrow-marked. They are a bit of an enigma as the common understanding is the I-broad arrow indicates Indian service, but there are a bunch of such-marked carbines here in Canada, many with the D.C. Canadian marking. You might want to pop on over to the British Militaria Forums. Lots of good Snider info there, including my database of Canadian Sniders and a thread about these enigmas. And congratulations on this carbine. I have one and I love it.

As for the "STEEL" marking. Let's you know it's a new made barrel in that material versus an iron barrel as used in earlier Snider/Snider-Enfield manufacture.

Any of these help?

Have no fecords of the 7th having a Cavalry troop....especially with the London troop of Cavalry in the same town...it looks like a Cavalry Carbine to me but I imagine the buttplace has been switched out at some point.
