Snider enfield carbine 577 cal what's it worth?

I have a freind who has a snider enfield carbine 577 cal,he's trying to find out what it's worth so he can sell it.The carbine 37 1/4" long 19" barrel,stock has a nice Enfield cartouche and number 1 under it on the butt .No cracks in the wood just the normal scratches and dents for a rifle this old.The metal has a nice brown patina,it has a ladder rear sight and post front.It has a crown and the letters VR behind the hammer on the right side,it also has a small crown with a arrow pointing down to 1871 enfield on the right side in front of the hammer.The only thing that i see is wrong with it is the brass trapdoor in the butt is missing.I have pics available if anyone can help me figure out what it's value is,any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Well, with your limited description I would say it is a cavalry carbine. This is the most valuable of the Sniders if it is in good condition. If it happens to be a Canadian issue all the better. It should have a screw in the stock just below the ladder sight on each side which were to hold the rear sight cover. Are there any markings on the butt stock? Photos would help. <hurlbutc@rideau.net> is my e-mail address. Condition is everything. Bore and rifling are important. Price....well, anywhere from $500.00 to $1,200.00. Send some photos. If it is a fake your will see where the ramrod channel has been filled (plugged) at the front of the forestock. It should be a Mk.3 action with the push in thumb latch and the lockplate should be marked with a date in the 1869 - 1872 era. Barrel should be marked "steel". E-mail me with pics. Dave
 
Two basic Snider Carbines out there....you need to know if he has a real Carbine, or just a cut-down three-band Snider commonly known as the "1905 Cadet" Big price differential- surely by now the punters should have learned that if they can't provide a decent description, a jpeg or two would certainly help them a lot.....
