Snider to 24 gauge shotgun conversion?

57 Snider is 25 gauge. 24 gauge is close enough that it doesn't matter but 28 gauge ??? absolutely not. You don't need to do anything except buy some 24 gauge brass shotshell casings..."Magtech".....load them up and you are away. Why not if the bore has no rifling? Good luck. Dave

I have some Snider barrels with genuinely horrible bores. Have thought about reaming them smooth, going up to 20ga. Cases are readily available.

id leave them alone one you can only fit about a 2" case and two theres already plenty of smooth bored sniders around

and yes you can use 28ga shell in it but i dont recommend it and if you do you better have a mk3 snider

If you are serious about it, I have a special deep-hole drill/reamer that drills out to .609", which would be almost perfect for 24 gauge. I could rent it out reasonably, or do it for you. Looking at the specs, it would clean up the front of the chamber just about perfect for the chamber.

I would love to do it someday. Don't have a donor rifle right now. I think it would be a very cool gun to bushwack black ducks with, if loaded with that expensive high falutin heavier-than-lead shot.

id leave rifles the way they are no need to bubba or destroy a piece of history here guys when there are plenty of smooth bored sniders around already just look around and you will find one

even with bad rifling they can work well enough (the rifling was thin already and they have wide grooves so some may look worn but they are not) they tend to want a bigger bullet .585"-.600" soft cast work best

want a 24ga for fun well there's also plenty of them in single shot form H&R made some as did other companys ive seen a few in EE of corse they ended up seeing there was no need for a 24ga or 32ga when you had 20ga,28ga,.410 bore sort of how the 16ga started fading away and how 14ga is never found

You really wouldn't want to know what was done to the Old Fort Henry Sniders to make it easy to supply them with blank ammunition.

Just had a thought. If I can find a 20ga take off barrel, I could thread it 1-14 and install it in one of my wrecks. Easier than reaming and rechambering. Did this with a Martini 12/14ga Police gun with a horribly bulged muzzle, and a 12ga barrel from a Cooey single shot. Snake swallowed frog type bulge. You couldn't tell by looking at it that it had been rebarrelled. Fitted the barrel to the stock, rather than the other way around, so that the original barrel could be replaced.

Here is my most recent acquisition (gun show novelty) needless to say bubba got to it a while ago so now it's time to do something fun. Unless someone knows a real easy source for .577 reloading gear, I think I'm gonna try to do the 24 gauge. where does one find the brass casings?

you dont need loading gear just something to punch out the old primer wash the casing (if brass) a 24ga brass or plastic casing and a .600 round ball and some wads (and grease cookie) blackpowder too of corse fg is your best bet the way it is it would be a mean little bear gun also the barrel has been cut a little more but it looks much like the "cadet" carbine
