sniper central velociyt vs. length .308

No, but I thought I would post something about my .308 (Savage 10FCP-HS). I had it cut from 24 to 20. Here are some stats I have with the current setup:

8-10 degrees C.
Lapua case, Varget 43.5, CCI 200, 168 Amax - Average velocity 2657
Lapua Case, Varget 45.5, CCI 200, 155 Scenar - Average Velocity 2840 (very very very low SD and ES)

I noticed that load development was easier with the shorter barrel and the "sweet spots" were wider and easier to find. Accuracy was better but that isn't fair to say it was just from the barrel length due to the follow:

Gunsmith crown vs. Factory
Rifle was bedded properly (in addition to the factory pillar bedding)
New SSS Recoil lug was installed (reason was I can swap barrels without having to re-bed later)
Action face was ground.

I prefer the 20" tube as it is portable and I carry it in the woods and such. For .308, it is a good length with Varget.

Keep in mind that custom barrels are often faster and you may loose less. Also what you are shooting makes a difference (load or ammo). I do not regret it as it fit my goals and this Savage shoot great.

Also noted with this setup and the work done: POA and POI with cold and warm barrel is in the same zone. The only difference is clean cold barrel but that is to be expected.

I was about to post on this same topic yesterday, as I'm trying to determine the best finish length for my new 308 barrel for F-TR.

I'm still hoping I can do 30" and still make weight, but I wondered whether 28" was just as good if I'm using a relatively fast burning powder like Varget (as opposed to something like RL17).

Sorry Ron if I'm derailing your thread.
