Sniper Challenge

Come up after Xmass and smoke some yotes, I will show you the real-estate and drop ya some hints, but if your competing I can't give you too much detail it would be an unfair advantage, if you volunteer to work I will give you all the details about a little event called Mutts Mile :)

Here is where we stand to date and some hints as to what to considder when prepping for this shoot.

The first draft of the course of fire for the event will be e-mailed out to volunteers and consultants for review and feed back. It is my belief that this will be challenging to all regardless of experience, and our hopes that all will walk away with great memories and a feeling of accomplishment regardless of what place your team finnishes.

Things to considder for this match:

1. If you are new, do your homework on the kit you bring, you will have to pack amongst your team all gear brought to the match for the entire duration of the match. You will have to move, deploy your kit, and move off range with time limits, plan well do your homework and reference what military teams considder essential gear. Extra weight and tacticool over planning will hurt you in this event.

2. This is not a groomed rifle range, she's all natural. Tall grasses, rocks, thistles, cow patties, and other things could be where you will be positioned, so prone may not be the best position in some cases. Be prepared to utilize what you have to make the shots!

3. Laser range finders will be allowed, but plan for a mechanical failure, real or simulated. Do your homework on ranging the old fashioned way, you may be handicapped if you don't.

4. Hint Charging Ivan Figure 11 are 17" wide 44" tall, figure 12's 17" wide 21.5" tall. This is useful information, if you don't understand why this is useful information you need to do some homework.

5. BORS will not be allowed on competition rifles or any similar system, unless it is a piece of issued kit equipped on a service rifle with LE competitors.

6. Match targets will be as close as in your face out to @1400yrds. Participants are allowed 1 rifle for the entire event. No caliber or configuration restrictions, just remember you have to pack it.

7. One optional event will be at extreme range, beyond 2400 meters. Rifles will be provided for this event, or you can bring your own rifle specific to reaching this range. Focus will be on .50BMG .338 Lapua, or .408 Cheytac or others in this category.

8. This is a team event and you will be very dependent on your team mate. Register as a team with a designated sniper or as the brains, a designated spotter. Both roles play an active and important part of this match. Practice as a team prior to the match and learn to work together.

9. Preference will be given to those registering for the event as a team, individuals looking for partners can register and we will try and pair you up with someone in your area. If you are new to this let us know, and we may be able to hook you up with an experienced mentor.

10. To all, this is a competition but the opportunity to challenge yourself beyond your known norms is there. Take advantage of the opportunity and keep good sportsmanship and safety as your number 1 concern and all will walk away winners.

More to come as it progresses.

In a nut shell, plan well. Think strategy, mobility, timing. Most of all have fun.

Just checked in, where and when?

We are looking at one of two weekends, May 4-5-6 or May 11-12-13. Location will be ruffly 1.5 hrs North of Edmonton off of HWY 831.

We are working on permision to utilize private land to set up a campground for the event attendees and volunteers.

In the area are some small towns with motels. These would be within 20 minutes of the shoot venue for those more accustomed to a soft bed. We would expect these rooms to be booked out to RCR or Law enforcement types. :p :slap::D We will provide a list of accomodations in the area for those that so choose with the shoot package. (no its not done yet so dont ask.)

If anyone has a lead on a mess tent as well as wall tents or Bell tents for those needing a place to lay up please drop us a line.

Our thought at this time would be to have people show up to the stageing area/camp on the Friday for registaration, orientation, Kit inspection and preparation, Meet and greet with fellow compeditors sh*ts giggles and good times. Early to bed, and be on range for sun up to start the fun on Saturday. Camp out again Saturday night.....maybe a pig or two roasted on an open fire....If Danger Deb will stay back in camp and cook for us;) Then return to range on Sunday and finish off the match by Noon. Have an open range for a couple of hours where you can plink at will and maybe share each others toys. Then thank you for coming and send ya home.

Okay I have read the last 7 pages and it sounds very interesting. I would be in considering the location and dates. I really like the idea of no wind meters and unknown distances. This makes it a challenge!!!

We are simply blown away by the quality and quantity of people who have offered to assist in this event as consultants, field help, logistics, supply targets as well as those who have offered themself's up to mentor and compete. You all know who you are and I just want to say a huge THANK YOU. The level of profesionalism is beyond outstanding and this event can not happen without people like you.

Were going to give directions via grid reference on a 1:50,000 map, part of the competition will be finding your way there.:p

We will be giving specific directions to compeditors when all is finalized. Part of us getting the location we have is ensureing the land owner is not inandated with requests for people to come out and shoot as well as just driving out on thier own. The land we have to utilize is a privalage and we do not want to abuse that privalage. Please understand we are not trying to be top secret on all the details, we just dont want to put out alot of information that may or may not hold true.

This is still in the planning stage and there are alot of monkey wrenches that can still be thrown into this plan that could put all these plans down the crapper.

Back to the positive, we have a great team of people dedicated to pulling this off, we have great quality shooters interested in making it happen, and we have a very good land owner willing to give us a go. And best of all we have Max our shoot's head target presenter from Ontario!!:D

Nothing much at this time Hend, I have recieved some good suggestions to the original course of fire and will be making adjustments based on some of that advice. We are going to try and get together as a group to finalize our event structure and another trip into the field for course layout and hopefully a dry run. At this Time weather, work, and miles, have made it tuff for everyone to get together but we hope to have it all laid out by end of Feb.

Check out the 24 hour Survival Challenge televised on Shooting Gallery last week. It's a 24 hour 2 man team challenge, each person must pack a sniper rifle, an AR and handgun. plus survival gear. I think I saw one of the competitors on the show wearing a maple leaf flag so there was a Canuck at the match. Zac Smith is also organizing a similar event in New Mexico this June/July. The Sniper Challenge organizers are running two events this year - entry $500 per person.
