Sounds great!Beautiful area too!I'm sure my partner and I would come out and shoot it...if it was operationally relevant.If your going to put 2000m shots in for guys firing .308and such there wouldn't be much point.Keep the targets reasonable(man) sized.Keep the distances realistic for the rifles being used.Keep the stalks reasonable.A 1000m stalk is not reasonable unless you have hours to kill for each team and all fit participants.Make matches that utilize basic sniper skills.Not all matches need to have shooting involved.If you make it too physically demanding you will lose more folks than you will gain.Some compass work would be cool.I always wanted to run a match where you have folks acting as characters at the actual shooting stations.IE you do a 700m compass move to a point and when you arrive you are met by someone playing a partisan,guide or someone who gives you your task.It could be taking a shot or finding a target, to ranging something using only mils or whatever.
All of these types of matches I've been to usually have target detection and ranging exercises where you don't shoot but have a limited amount of time to find and range some well camed up targets.

I like your idea about the compass work and having to reach a destination to receive your task.

Good of you to pipe in Longshot, we have been toying with some of those very ideas. I mentioned to Jim about identifying hidden targets at unknown ranges under a time limit for points, each team would have to give a target description, range and grid reference for each target they identify. I have access to topo maps I should be able to print out, then for the shooting side randomly having each team draw a designated target from a hat and then finding and engaging that very target with a cold bore shot scoring a hit or a miss. Each hidden target identified in the first part would be worth X points, correct range X points, and correct grid reference X points.
We are also thinking of an event where the spotter can perform the securtiy task on a short distance DD out, utilizing a non restricted semi auto rifle or tactical shotgun to clear targets on a trail through the bush,(scoring on time, and targets engaged) Missed targets could score 5-10 second penalties against time, maybe escorted by your "Partisan" (i like that idea).This is what I was thinking for a kickoff to the competition for day 1.
Day 2, down to some serious LR target engagement.

Great idea! That would sure stir things up and add a little anxiety to your day!
but still like the idea.Another task that could be handed to you could be some kind of hostage rescue or something. I don't know if there are any old barns on that property but if there were and the owner didn't mind maybe a few bullet holes in the boards we could place a "hostage" inside with "guards". Placed in windows, at the doors, throughout the barn/shed etc. You'd have to find the structure via compass and creep within shooting distance to take out the lookout in the window or door, whether from a tree line or a creep across an open field to get into position. Next you'd gain access to the barn taking out another guard or so (this is where your spotters tach shotgun or non res semi would come in). Not sure how you'd score that or take penalties, but was just brain storming trying to come up with more ideas hoping to jar the ideas of others who are more creative or practical than I.
Were still planning at this point. Glockamaniac is looking into another venue at this point. The organizers are all but together,maybe one more person to bring on. If you have anything to contribute, please do. There has been lots of great ideas so far.

I share your concern. We need to accommodate everyone. It's not fair to set a course of fire that a select few are able, simply by the equipment they own. I want to push the shooters ability to preform, after all it is a competition. There are five people involved, with various backgrounds, setting this up. At this point i'm not sure exactly how were going to set it up. It's going to be different from any civilian shoot that most of us have been in. Keep the ideas coming!!!

THese are all really good ideas guys. Just through reading through these posts, I like the concept of having characters role playing in the field. Naturally a range officer would follow through each exercise to make sure everything went smoothly but to have a 'change in plans' from base camp while on some sort of mission would be excellent!!!
As we get everything ironed out, the guys wanting to sign up will have plenty of time to get organized in terms of target size, getting in a bit better shape maybe, practice compass reading, ghillie suit aquisition... Let's make this an awesome event to learn from, have fun at and make some awesome contacts also!!!

I'll definitely be bringing my 50 and my 308. Maybe I'll even have another 338LM AI built by then. I think it would be awesome to schedule in a long range shooting day or morning into the weekend as well since we have so much land to take advantage of.
I'm jealous! I would love to buy a 50 but realistically I don't have a convenient place to shoot it. I have convenient access to a 900m range but that would get boring quickly with a 50 cal. It would be a waste.
Good idea about organizing a long range shooting day into the weekend. I'm sure there will be shooters who don't have access to even a 500m range and having the chance to get their come-ups would be very beneficial before the shoot. Zeroing your rifle and getting your trajectories plotted the day before and at the very location of the shoot would be very helpful, a confidence builder and might equate to more long range hits.
