A few of us have been thinking about a competition that involves more than just shooting at a range. The format would include, tracking to various targets in an area that would present different targets at unknown distances. It could take place over 3 days and two nights where we camp. Just wondering if there is any interest in such an event ?

Just kicking the idea around. The venue, the format, point system, and pretty much everything would be open for discussion.

over the weekend, hell yes, the war dept. might let me do this but not you never know. would love to try to get within 200 yards with some else looking back, have tried this with a camera looking back with some luck. top sniper shots can be copied? not many places can give you a 1000 y crawl and then a 300 y shot with some one watching at an angle so there not in the line of fire. blanks for 338 or 375 are hard to find or make. i am in durham, where is it to be held?

Possibly between Calgary and Edmonton close to the mountains. The foothills offer lots of up and down and great scenery. The logistics involved make it a challange to setup, however the experience would be worth it. Like I said before, any and all suggestions regarding the venue, format, cost, and everything thing else is on the table.I believe it should present different challenges as far as, shot distance, up and down angle shots, concealment , just to name a few. It can be difficult, but not to the point you have to be a professional to enjoy it. Post your thoughts.

Not to put a damper on the possible shoot but the trick will be to make sure there would be no one else in the area or someone who may happen to be out back country hiking or hunting if it is crown lands. Private would be okay but be certain of the backing to not put someone in jeopardy if they are on the perimeter......

I know you are thinking about that anyways.

I was involved in a shoot on crown land some years ago, and that was the biggest concern. The risk to non participants can be mitigated, but requires the involvement of a number of volunteers, Communication and careful setup are paramount. This is exactly why we need input from anyone with any experience setting up this type of event.

stage 1; crawl on target, get range with over watchers in place with one walker with sniper team, 5 points if in 300, 10 for 200 etc. if seen by over watchers, sniper will shot later from that spot, than mark off his place with team tag and colors. have over watcher hold up a card with word or numbers to copy, 10 more points. remove over watchers and replace with life size target of them have sniper and spotter call wind for 10 points, send 1 round down range for 30 points for a bull any thing else on paper 15 points , 2 nd round for 20 for bull, 10 for paper, etc, before shooting any skill level will get points for the crawl , wind, out of 100 for 3 kill shots. comm's for over watchers and walkers, frs radios

Interesting idea. I think we should also consider a team that scores from long distance where concealment is secondary. Time also needs to be considered along with equipment ,as most people don't own a gillie suit or have the knowledge to set it up for the area. Having said that, I think that format would be way COOL.

plain camo coveralls at 300 yard for 5 points would work in the open, hunted out west in tiger camo and it worked well untill 200 or so. type of rifle, more points for lesser equip. change the set up for the type of shoters that show up

stage two; all shoters on the line, find 10 odd targets from 100 to 300 yards; draw a range card with distance and wind; if not all found spotters try to find; time 10 min each person ; shooting at target at any range use 3moa 2 moa 1moa .5moa each for more points if any missed you are done then. know your limits target spin off. time 10 min

Im sure we can make the 900m homestead range available at some point if we know long enough in advance or if a winter shoot would be in the cards. The terrain is great, and you could shoot all the way out to 900. We would need a range officer etc. but im sure it could work. If anyone is interested in a winter shoot at Homestead, then send me a PM and im sure we could make it happen.
Cheers
Eric

It's nice to here from you. A private venue would be the answer. As for the format, we need to sit down with a group willing to put the time in to make it happen. I have sent PMs to a number of people you know, and hope we can start a dialogue and perhaps put something together for next summer. It would be great to have you on board.

Personally I would like to see shooters rewarded for longer shots on various sized targets at a distance that they determine based on there ability. That not to say some kind of concealment could not play a role. Most shooters I know are not capable of crawling any great distance. The other concern would be the weather. Crawling in the mud would take away from the whole experience. One more consideration is time. Both sniper and spotter must shoot. It would be nice to have a second and different course for the second shooter the following day. If you have ever shot sub minute from 500 to 1500 meters, it's a thrill that stays with you for a long time. Just my personal thoughts.

This sounds like a lot of fun! I agree we need to first focus on where, and how we can make the shoot safe for everyone especially non participants. With that figured out the rest will come easily.

I feel we shouldn't be worried about the weather. Yes it would be more uncomfortable crawling in the mud but that would make it more realistic wouldn't it? Isn't that the point of this shoot? To mimic real life scenarios. The turn out would be fewer if the weather forecast was poor so that could ruin well laid plans if not enough people show up. I for one would be happy to craw all day in bad conditions. It's fun to put your gear/equipment to the test. The same gear you spent good money on because it was designed for just that. I don't own a gillie suit but I sure would buy one just for this occasion. I'm stoked already just at the prospect!

Not a bad idea. How would we organize it? Would we crawl in from an unknown location? We'd have to shoot from somewhere inline between the 900m line and the pits so it would narrow down where the shooter could be concealed when taking the shot. Winter time is definitely less busy there but concealment in the open snow covered ground would be very challenging. Just thinking out load. Might be the best place due to the established berms, target pits, access, public safety etc. I wonder how the APRA would feel about it?
