Sniper rifle on "shooter, the movie"

The book "point Of Impact" for which the movie is based on is much better and more believable, first off they said they had recovered the bullet that was fired at the can, how would they find it not knowing he had made a shot in the first place. Second I don't think snipers would switch shooting back and forth from left to right side as he did in this movie.

another part of the movie that made me wonder, how they knew he shot at the can and how they even found that bullet.

All this talk and noone talked about the 22lr ammo bang flopping the bad guys at 200 yards.

BTW it was a can of stew at 1 mile and a big one at that. :)

It may be a dumb movie but it still beats watching beaches or some other estrogen fest.

by a mile

I tell myself it was a .22 Magnum. Getting the knockdown strength he got supposedly with the .22LR would be very hard to do past 150 yards. And I wish I could make standing shots from a boat that well.

And the silencer on a .22LR? How much did he really need to dampen the sound of a .22LR there? Sure, go ahead, silence a .22 Magnum.

Ah the beans...or stew...I'll call it beans:

Has anyone reached out to a can of beans yet? I've opened a 500 ml bottle of water before (previously unopened) with 162 grains(not fmj) at about 2800 fps and it certainly replicated that can of beans minus the brown. With a previously opened bottle of water at the right distance though it is easy to get a little frustrated. (Closer inspection should reveal water leaking from everywhere.)

My intuition for some reason is telling me there would just be a can of beans with an entry and exit. The beans being stored at a slight vacuum and the tin vs. plastic....

Decent entertainment for sure.

The stew can thing has me wondering. I have a Superstore brand can of unedible pea soup. On Sunday I will try a can of soup at 800 with the 308 and see what occurs. I am not saying we will drop on it on the first go, but we will have at it and see where it takes us. I think a 308 at 800 versus a 408 at 1700 should be somewhat similar, maybe, or not? I have to find go find Rob and his Video camera.

Hitting it at 200 m or 300 m should be fine for our purposes. Do your worst though. It'll either be peeled open or just punctured. FMJ or soft-point?

Looking forward to hearing.

Its a movie not a training film, take it for what its worth, entertainment. The majority of the public are not gun enthusiasts and have no clue. No different than the CSI Shows and all the ER/Grey's Anatomy type shows. I am sure all the real docs and forensic cops no doubt shake their heads at those shows as well. Who cares they are just tv shows and movies.

Troops, you keep getting bent over the axle, it's a movie, it's not real get on with it.

For a realistic test, use the Lost River bullets and simply load them down to around 1500 fps. Then you can shoot the can at 50 yds and get a reasonable idea of what would happen at 1 mile. I have 6.5 and 30 cal LR bullets so would have to use a smaller can of stew to get the proper bullet/target ratio.
EC,
It's conversation, it's about shooting, rifles, and ballistics as well as their portrayal in the entertainment media. Nothing wrong with dialogue no matter how meaningless. Some education may even result. Regards, Bill.

I googled the specs on the Cheytec rifle it currently holds a confirmed world record for accuracy. With 10 rounds It shoots a 16" group at 2382 yards and its only costs $12000.00, It pokes a cleaner hole then the 50BMG thru 1/2 plate with AP rounds @ 1000yards. I would go out and buy two of these right now but am preparing for the Depression I going to need lots of Ammo.
Cheers:)

definatley the Cheytac, the episode on it on futureweapons was really good, it was interesting to see that boat tail design with the classical boat tail and then the double radius reduction even further after the boattail, have to read into that for other bullet designs, though past 1200 m the cheytac is certainly strickly an anti personelle round, out at the longer sniper based ranges seen today the 50 still reigns supreme for anti materiel work. what is needed is an improvement for the 50 or a different intermediate cartridge. back in high school i envisioned an intermediate like the 408 cheytac or 416 barrett. unfortunatley it was developed before i had the chance to start inventng. ever get the feeling the government is tracking thoughts in your head. I've had several ideas in the last 6 years that have come out as commercial/special application projects. maybe thats just the natural paranoina that everyone in the universe feels. oh well, my next ideas i wont even think of until i can do them so they don't get made without me in on them.
