Probably thinking:

Jolly ho! Those lovely Canadian boys in their red caps make excellent people! I hope the chaps brought some good ole Canadian beer along

I'm joking of course.

It is definitely a .303 British No.4 Mk.1 that has been "modified."

I've heard of WWII Enfield sniper rifles having trigger jobs, but I've never seen one with a cut down stock before.

#####ing indeed, that Kraut is lucky they aren't all being mowed down.

A friend told me of a Canadian Vet he knew that fought into Germany. They were under the command of a British officer who ordered them to annihilate a group of Germans that were trying to cross the Rhine to surrender to them.

An earlier posting mentions Clive Law's book on Canadian sniper rifles. It is a worthwhile purchase, both to spread the knowledge and to support a small Canadian publisher.

I've a pic somewhere of a Canadian with a cut down Ross equiped with what I suspect is a Winchester scope (convensional tube vs the W-S). I suspect front line armourers or the Snipers themselves could make alterations to their own preferences.
Makes us all wish our own sporterized Ross had a traceable lineage to the WWI front in such configuration.:D

I've been reading two books on WW1 sniping and their equipment. I was amazed to learn that on both sides of the trenches, German and British officers (and OR's) were encouraged to bring to the front lines, their own private hunting rifles, or ones donated (the Germans conscripted their use) by civvies.

There was a huge assortment of different non military calibers at the front, including heavy caliber scoped African safari hunting rifles. The latter was particularly good at shooting through the armored plates with peepholes, used to protect snipers.

There are a couple of good books on the subject. Although I posted about them in a different thread, I'll repost it here, for those that might have missed it and are interested in more reading about this subject.

New comments have been added to the section in our MKB in the British Service Rifles section:............
