Alright guys, please keep the bashing the newbi to a minimum!!

I haven't had much time to read about precision/long range rifles.

I'd like to learn to shoot a rifle, accurately, I've always been intrested in 'snipers' I've watched videos and read a bit about them. I have no idea if a Canadian is able to purchase such a gun. .50 cal? I know these are not allowed to be shot at my local range.

what type of Rifles are closest to a 'sniper' type Ie. make and model If you have any pictures please post up, along with the cost and stats.:shotgun:

Go to 'remington.com' and look at the 'military and law enforcement' section(s) check out the remington 700 'tactical/varmint line'. Pretty much every manufacture makes a 'target/varmint' rifle...Anywheres from 500.oo-7000.oo CDN + Then you have your scope(s)...Again the only limit is price, most popular calibres are 223(556) 762(308) .300 winchester magnum and as of late the .338 Lapua.

Google away.......

PS...If you want pics...go to the 'photo section' of CGN

Hey, thank you very much for the speedy reply,

After posting this I found out alot of people build up some pretty nice looking rem. 700

I'll start my search tomorrow.

The .50BMG is very legal in Canada, I own one. As well as many other rifles. There are many custom builders and guys that can fine tune your factory rifle into a precision drilling machine at extended ranges. Your best bet is to figure out what you want to do with your rifle and how far you want to reach then go from there. Figure out if it is a paper puncher or if your going to use it for hunting. The options are almost endless.

Check out Savage rifles as well, best factory trigger, period....user adjustable to 1 1/2 lbs

.223 flatter tragectory than .308, but .308 gets you out a bit further  and has more omhhh behind it

scopes aren't cheap $400-600 gets you a good scope to start with in long range

all package with bipod, scope, rings/base, rifle should get you out to about $1500  plus/minus

It doesn't get much more sniper then this. This thing will kill out to a Mile
(1700yds). It doesn't get much more custom either but you could get the exact same gun from a 700action also without spending the 2500 or so on a Nesika M action.

Sniper Hide forum is another great place to learn what military, law enforcement and competitor use and why.

Stick with 223 or 308 and learn, when you go throught your first rifle than you will have the knowledge to choose the right plateform and caliber.

Remington is my personal choice and probably the most popular but Savage has been gaining a lot of support and will serve you well.

I would have to agree with pilot dc. Getting a .50 bmg for your first rifle is not a good idea. It takes a lot of skill to get the fullest potential out of those rifles and as a first time gun owner chances are that you don't have that kind of skill. I would start off with either a .223 or a .308 to get the basics down before you move to a larger round. As for sniping, .308 has been the favorite for years and you can get lots of different loads for it. And, if you want to go really cheap to figure out things like trigger control and shot release I find that a good way to do that is to get a good bolt action .22. You should have one of those anyways to shoot gophers :p.
Anyways, I hope that helps.

Dont Start At The Top

For someone new starting out, my own opinion would be to get a 223 (caliber) rifle. Go stock. Get out and shooting and learn good techniques (trigger control, breathing) and then start to reload. 223 is cheaper for factory ammo to get started. Recoil is minimal.

Thats what i was thinking and the cost is a way lower!
Someone said figure what you want to do with the rifle, what kinda range you wanna shoot.

Id say figure out a budget and see how much you can spend then go from there:D

Maybe even start out with a rimfire!

Here's my rig:
IMG_1559.jpg

Specs
Rifle: Remington 700 Police with a bedded action and a trigger tuned down to 3lbs ($1150)
Scope: Leupold Mark 4.5-14x50mm LR/T With Tactical Milling Reticle ($1460)(looks like this:
TMR_1.gif

Mounts: 20MOA Warne, 30mm low TPS rings (+-$200)
Bipod: Versapod 9-13" Aluminum ($160)
Sling (not shown): Tactical Intervention M24 ($80)
All in all it's cost me $3040, and it's been well spent.

The picture there is when I had my higher mounts still on.
I got the rifle bedded and tuned by a guy we're not allowed to name in the public forums do to a dispute a while back, but it's the rifle he sells to numerous Law Enforcement agencies across Canada, and it's arguably the "standard" rifle for most LE agencies. Of course you don't need to go as far as I did (i.e. the MK4 Scope, you'll do fine with a Bushnell 4200 which should cost you under $600, the M24 Sling). I know that it's reliable, and can shoot better than I can any day of the year.

I'd agree with the rest, start with a .223 or a .308. I started shooting longer range with someone's .223, then I eventually bought my own .308. I had a bit of a problem with the recoil of the .308 at first, but it's really quite manageable now. .223 is definately cheaper, but I can hunt with my .308 and it isn't as affected by elements as the lighter .223. These guys definately know what they're talking about; don't start with a .50. They start at around $3500 from what I've seen, and ammo is bloody expensive. Not to mention you won't be able to shoot it just anywhere.

if your into sniper rifles and new to the sport there are alot of guys on here that can help you out.
depending on what your budget is like look to spend at least $1,000 on the rig and from $500 up on glass.
as for calibers if your new to shooting start lite .223, .308 for example as you will likely devolop a flinch starting big .338lm,.50 bmg etc.
if your budget minded you can get a stevens 200 in your choice of calibers *again .223, .308 is a good start* for roughly $400 and build on it *sniperish stock, custom barrel, etc*
next are you looking for sniper rifles t ocompete in tactical matches or just for general range/hunting time and LCF?
anyway heres my rig i just picked it up today from gunco.

stevens 200 action, custom pacnor 28" barrel in 300Win Mag, choate USS stock, crapco/tasco glass *to be changed after i catch up on the bills from changeing the barrel*. for glass i have heard alot of good reviews on the menace and merlin line of scopes sold by CGN member Cyberk and IIRC they come in under $500.

Nothing wrong with starting out with .223, Can shoot them accurate out to 600M easy. I got 3 Long Range Rigs 2X Bolt 308 1X Semi 223, ranging from 600-2900$

Heres the El Cheapo ones...

Mauser 98 and P14 both with 308 Barrels. Both Cost me under 800$ to do up...

What can you tell me about the first gun?

"Mauser 98 and P14 both with 308 Barrels. Both Cost me under 800$ to do up..."

Is that $800 including the cost of the scope? or just the rifle?
