So tonight I was out bowhunting in S.Ontario and I had a Deer just out of reasonable range stop and start snorting/wheezing, then he stomped on the ground a few times and ran off...

Did he "scent" me, or become aware of another Buck?
Looking for response from seasoned hunters only please, BigRedd etc.

You were scented or partially identified by movement/sound or shape. Still they are a creature of curiosity and they snort stomp to look for total identification or reaction.
Good luck in your hunting efforts obviously you are getting close and with more experience and some luck you will get within good shooting distance.
Cheers

Were you hunting on the ground or in a tree stand? What about the direction of the wind? If he was downwind of you chances are he smelled you and reacted. Have been in that situation before. About 3 or 4 years ago i bought a API grandslam supeme climbing stand and i find that deer get alot closer without knowing i am there. Good luck in the future.

Breath in as deep as you can then blow all the air in your lungs out your nose as hard as you can in a quick burst. That is the sound a spooked deer deer makes, especaly when they get your scent.

The foot stomping is ..well I don't realy get that one... but if you stomp back at them it can make for some entertainment.

its actully pretty cool when that happens. had a nice buck do that to me in marlborough forest last week when i went rabbit hunting couldnt have been any more then 10-15 yrds from me i could have thrown a stone at him LOL

it isn't necessarily a buck either, unless of course you saw and identified it as one. Does are quite capable of snorting/stomping also. I woke up in the middle of the night a couple of weeks ago, to a doe snorting from the end of my deck, looking in the patio screen at me. I must have moved in my sleep and startled her.

The stomping is a warning to other deer in the area that something is wrong, the snort means that they have scented you and you might as well go home. When they stomp they release an alarm musk from a gland in their feet, another deer coming along smells it and gets real wary or changes direction. In any case you won't see another deer for quite a while. That has been my experience.

I was out grouse hunting one year and had a doe do this to me. I thought it was pretty cool. Of course, once deer season opened, nary a deer to be seen.

My son and I had a similar experiance last night four deer ran out in front of us two does and a two fawns Three came from behind us through the swamp and water they got to about fourty or so yards of my son and began snorting and wheezing and thrashing around the water and bush for about a half hour finally when it was completely dark we climbed down and began our walk out when one began snorting and wheezing again. I have experianced this before but never for as long or as many as this. Normally they snort a few times stomp the ground and run off this guy was obviously pissed with us and he wanted to see those Does.

I was sitting in a dense bushlot, well hidden with full camo and slight breeze.
The general response had been: He "scented" me. Thats fine, I'll give that location a few days and go again.

I've taken plenty of game by Shotgun/Rifle but Bowhunting has a great edge, real up close and personal!

Thanks guys, I'll post a pic when just as soon as I catch up to him/her. ;)

I had a doe and fawn trailed by a young buck and she was not very pleased at his advances. She let out a very loud 'squeal snort' that I had never heard before. The buck walked about 25' from me and never made it to that doe.....
