Snow tracks for ATV

Would anyone have any experience with snow tracks for ATV ? I have a choice between 2 brands. The Camoplast or the Kimpex for my Honda Rubicon. These tracks will be used for around the farm and when coyote hunting...
 
Personally I would buy a sled. For about the same price as the tracks you can buy a pretty decent sled. Then you have the option if you ever decide that you can take it on a trail. Not limited to very low speeds. Just my $0.02.
 
My father has Tatou tracks on his, and my buddy runs Kimpex...They both work good...They do make you burn 3-4X as much fuel as with tires, which IMO works out to 3X the wear, and tear on your drivetrain.

My big issue with them is how you get covered in snow running tracks...I mean COVERED!
 
The few people I know who bought some put them up for sale the spring after. It depends what you want do it with it. Just don't think it will turn your ATV into a snow machine.....especially not in late March !!!
 
An atv on tracks will go places most snowmachines would only dream about!
Had a local guy buy a set of Kimpex for his Cat. In two years I don't think he ever returned home with-out some part of the track system broken. That's a few yrs ago now, maybe the Kimpex system has improved..:cool:! Know a few other with track systems that are perfectly happy.
 
One thing to keep in mind is if your machine is still on warranty it will void it unless you buy tracks made by the ATV company. They are great in snow and any one who says they are not has never used them. The seismic crews use them throughout the winter here. I have not seen any problems. (Arctic Cat & Matttracks) but, cannot speak about the others. I would not put them on a machine under 700 cc as they do take power. Another thing I would recomend is power steering on the atv. Without it steering can be heavy and in reverse almost impossable. They do take a bit of time to switch from track to tire but not to bad.
 
I have ridden a Honda ATV, 500cc, with a set of tracks on it and it was amazing. I ran it in snow and out in a muskeg last spring to retrieve a trail cam. The only problem was climbing over larger diameter logs, the track nose wedged under the tree instead of climbing over. If I had the cash I would pick up a set for my King Quad for winter use.

I would put them on a utv, not so sure about an atv though.
Makes the machine a 12 month a year unit.
I have been on one with tracks and was impressed with the agility and
the speed it managed to maintain.
I wouldn't climb mountains with it, but for NORMAL use, they would be great.

I played on a family member's ATV with the Camoplast. Watch out for deadfall and bigger logs with light snow cover and go SLOW over unknown terrain.

The kind of deadfall that an ATV will crunch through will wedge all kinds of crap in the steering and drivetrain with track on. Also, I wouldn't maintain any sort of speed for sustained periods. If you bust a track out in the middle of nowhere, it can be a LOOOONG walk home.
 
The only experience I have had was watching one get stuck in slush on a lake... I am surprised that the fella didn't die of hypothermia from all of the slush/water he ended up wearing.... After about a couple hours of fighting and trying to pull it out with 2 larger mountain sleds the guy ended up coming to shore and borrowing our saw to cut down a bunch of small trees to build a corduroy road to get it up and out of the slush... It was good entertainement for us while ice fishing, but didn't look like very much fun for the operator...
 
Well , I'm no daredevil and it's pretty flat at home so I don't have to worry about getting in trouble like in the mountains. I'm too old for that chit.:D I appreciate all the info.

I didn't realize the deadfall could be a problem but will take my time making trails for future use. I have been stuck with my brothers sled and yes it was a long walk back home.:mad: I guess , if I'm in real trouble I could always call my brother with his Argo and tracks to get me out.:rolleyes: Anyway, looks like Camoplast get the vote. If anyone has more info to pass on , I'll take all.:)
 
Tatou and Apache seem to be the most popular. Remember there are few tweaks that have to be done. Your mileage will be out..not sure how your steering works, but maybe limited. Let me stress this..tracks are for winter only, don't let anyone tell you different. Unless you want to change bearings and bogie's. I haven't decided on them yet, I have a sled though.

I have some buddy's who've tried them, they say that they're good in snow, muskeg, but really hard to steer. Power steering is a must, they say. I just talked to a guy with a ranger with tracks, cab, heater, and he goes everywhere with it, with a t-shirt on inside the cab in the winter, he absolutely loves it, and has no power steering. I keep debating on them myself. For fun in the snow (and speed) you can't beat a sled, and it's a lot warmer than driving a quad in the winter, but for one all around vehicle, I think the quad tracks make sense...or an argo?
 
Yes, I was on youtube and they have the type of tweaking required on the ATV req'd for the tracks. I'm sure the info will be with the tracks as well. I have intentions on using the tracks for snow only. Looking forward to having them...
