Her older sister has a CZ 452 Lux with a Bavarian stock, but the gun is too long and heavy for my 9yo girl. We’ve been to the range with her and this gun, and it’s just too big for my young’un.

Does CZ have *in Canada* something like their smaller scout model? (https://cz-usa.com/product/cz-457-scout/)

What are my alternatives? i want to avoid super cheap stuff, like Henry or Savage stuff, or toy-like single shots. “Buy once, cry once”, so I don’t mind spending a hair more with a rifle that she can grow into.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Well you did say buy once cry once?
Perhaps a single pump pneumatic crossman .177 would be lighter?

Is all of her shooting done standing? Absolutely no bench shooting?

Btw- congrats on getting your daughter into the sport! Awesome!

There's nothing wrong with a "cheap" Savage Rascal, it's gotten a lot of kids into shooting; and they're reasonably accurate.

Or, step up into the Mk.2 series; where you can end up with wood stocks and heavy barrels if you're going into the more "high end" side of the lineup.

Huge +1 to the savage rascal! Alternatively, as a sep up in size from the rascal but still smaller than the full sized cz, my tweenage daughters are both rocking the cz 455 camp right now, with the spacers removed it is pretty short.

I looked long and hard for a 457 scout up here and came up empty handed. So I settled on a 455 scout just the other day! Few years to go before my 4 month old son starts up shooting but he’ll be set when he’s ready. Such a generous gift from him for my first Father’s Day lol. Still waiting for delivery but they look like awesome little rifles in general let alone for a youth!

My 6 year old started with a Browning BL22, then a Savage Rascal, Savage MKII BVSS, and finally a Ruger Precision. His groups went from 3-5" at 50 yards down to about 1-2". The stock on the Ruger precision is fully adjustable. In 2 seconds I can switch from his setting to mine. But that's only for bench rest shooting. A BL22 Micro Midas or Rascal would do better for walking around.

Glad to see you are starting her out in the shooting sports, I'm sure she will have great fun. My little one is still too young for the responsibility, but I picked up a CZ452 scout a couple years back, just to make sure I had one for her when she was older. The scouts do seem to come and go, so you have to keep an eye out. There are other options out there, but I don't know if they are as classy as the CZ for the money. You could also check out the Browning T-bolt straight pull, or maybe their lever action BL-22, levers are super fun for beginners (then again, I would check those in person, to make sure the LOP isn't too long or too big/heavy).

I started my daughters off early with single shot crickets,
When my oldest was 9 I started getting her into repeaters
I started with a browning buck mark, however I believe for new youth shooters a bolt is much easier and safer than a semi auto.
I’d recommend a savage mkii. They’re cheap, readily available, they’re accurate, lots of shooters have em and have upgraded the stock to something better, you could easily pick up a spare stock at a reasonable cost and cut it to fit, then have the fulllsize to grow into, or better yet there are aftermarket stock and chassis options to grow into,
That being said, stay away from the synthetic stock options if you can. They’re so flimsy and cheap feeling and way to low on the comb for any sort of check weld.
I’m a big CZ fanboy! I’d say they’re 100% your best bet, but a savage for the cost and upgradeability are a close second. Especially if you factor in value you cannot get much better at the price point

For our family (rural Saskatchewan), since my Dad (born in 1924), pretty much new shooter starts with iron sighted single shot bolt action (Cooey 39 about perfect). (I was 63 when I bought the first air rifle in our family). Then learner moves to iron sighted repeater bolt action (Cooey 60 or 600 about perfect). When old enough to afford it, often then buy a scope. Many generations stopped about there. Could probably fill a 1/2 ton truck with gophers shot that way!! Some of us went on to try semi-auto .22. My son (42 this year) greatly prefers his 9422 with rear aperture sight, over 10/22 or other semi-auto. His 14 year old son is "done" with his Dad's hand me down single shot Lakefield, so Grandpa's .22 cabinet is now "short" a CZ 452 Silhouette. The gophers in the other Grandpa's pasture are in for exciting times!! Grandpa (me) quite happy to get a Cooey 39 back, to live with the Cooey 60, Ruger 10/22, Nylon 76 and the 22 magnums - Ruger 77-22M and Ruger 96-22M.

I know you said no savage, but I don’t think they are as bad people think. I bought a savage MKIIG, came with a nice wood stock. Slapped a Nikon prostaff rimfire II on it and it’s an absolute tack driver with CCI or federal black pack. Whole set up was less than $500

CZ 455 Supermatch has a bit lighter profile barrel, and it's shorter 20 5/8". Nice rifle and Tenda, Italian Sporting Goods have them for $599.00

I would never teach a child to shoot with a scope; open sights first, always. Iron sights on a CZ are good quality regardless of the Williams rear or the Tangent rear. I'm old, with old eyes, and I can still put them in black at 50 yards with CZ Tangent sights on a Brno 2 or peep sight on an old Cooey 78. I have a scope on my CZ455 trainer which has a heavy, long barrel; it us my long range target rifle; and one on my 455 17 HMR as humane kills matter to me on varmints. For fun and challenge, open sights are still my favorite!

+2 Definitely a good choice

I bought a Savage mk1 a few months ago with the intent of having it around to train some 6 and up nephews. It works great for that purpose. Single shot, very useable factory sights, a fantastic trigger, and a decent wood stock with a full floated barrel. The length of pull is 13 inches so I thought it might be a bit small for myself, but that isn’t the case. It’s very fun to shoot and accurate too.

I’m a CZ fanboy, but the mk1 is in my opinion perfect for youth and very usable for adults too, and half or less of a CZ scout.

I forgot about the Micro Midas BL22 from Browning! Perfect for smaller shooters, and also LEFTY friendly if that is a concern :)

Surprised no one has mentioned a tikka T1 with a 16" barrel. Much lighter than a woody in the price range of a cz and is a tack driver.
