So for the past while I have been wanting a 617 and a 500. I already own a few good accurate .22's and 44 mags...but for some reason it feels like it would be good to add a few more stainless revolvers to the stable to keep my 686 and 629 happy. Gotta make a big happy stainless family me thinks...Maybe its firearms withdrawal as I haven't bought myself any presents lately..talk me out of them...or talk me into them!! Oh and for some strange reason I have a need for another super black hawk in 44 mag with a 7.5 in. barrel...I really should have kept the first one I ever bought. Is this just a mid life crisis? A old age phase? To long of a winter? Should I lay down for awhile and hope it passes to keep my bank acct happy?

No! It's only money, why keep it in the bank account, it pay basically no Interest anyways (0.25-1%).

Well, if you don't have a S&W 17 already then a 617 becomes a very nice option. And one which will soon become a regular friend at the range.

The 500? Not so much I would suggest. Oh sure, it's fun to blast off the heavy wrist wrecker rounds now and then. But unless you're doing something with it that has at least some sort of purpose I just don't see the magic lasting for long.

I'd rather put that money into a long barrel SBH and set up the sights for longer distance shooting. Make that your long range artillery to show the in close handgunners that rifle like distances with a handgun are more than just barely possible.

I agree with BC Rider. My S&W 17 gets shot more than any pistol.
The 500 will always be a novelty gun for most Canadians as hunting with them is not an option unless one gets trapper permits for bears in those remote areas.

I agree, a 617 would be a nice addition to just about any collection. But sometimes you just have to have that one piece that only takes a few rounds to put that teenager smile back on your face.
If the SW500 does it for you....go for it! My HG for S&G's is the 460V.
BTW you need another 44mag 7.5" BlackHawk. I wouldn't part with my 7.5" SBH Bisley Hunter. I'm still thinking about scoping it and seeing what it can do @ 100yrds.

500 mag gets my vote with reloading and casting!

I already own a rem XP100 custom in 7-08...topped with a 4x burris it drives tacks. An a tc contender in 45-70 ( handgun) with a 2x7 burris for the ####s and giggles factor...an a pachmyer dominator conversion on top of a 1911a1 frame..the dom conversion is in full length 308 win..I got the long distance shooting part covered!!!

Then I'd say you have the heavy hitter and long distance stuff covered already all in those two guns. I shoot 7-08 from an Encore rifle and it's stout enough that I can only imagine what it would be like from an XP-100 (I'm also a little envious by the way. Those are SLICK guns! ! ! !) And I just don't even want to THINK about a .45-70 shot from a Contender. At least not the serious thumpers I'm used to shooting.

Hey, have you shot any black powder full loads from the Contender? The smoke and PUSH instead of a SLAP could be a lot of fun and provide a good bit of variety. You'd need to clean the barrel with hot water and whatnot at the end of the day but with a Contender it's a simple matter to un-mount the barrel to allow doing a full on dunk and scrub. Oh, wait, the scope would be in the way. Perhaps try it the one time and if you like it then look at finding a second barrel to use without the scope?

Spawn, those sure are some nice looking bullets.

I thought about bp in it..but the cleaning would be way to much hassle. It took me 20 years just to find this 45-70 barrel. They are real scarce!! I am going to stick with one heavy load shooting 350 grainers( jacketed) and smokeless...its not like you will be shooting 100 rounds out of it each time! The 405 grainers are fun,to say the least..Recoil gets to be quite high with them.I found that a 500 mag was nicer to shoot. The 7-08 has a massive bark, but its not bad recoil wise. Its actually like a heavy 44 mag load.

I say buy the 617 and a sheetload of different ammo to try in it. Whatever is most accurate at a reasonable cost, go out and buy at least 25,000 rds. of that ammo (same lot # if possible) and have at it. More, if you can buy it at a great price. As much as the 500 sounds like fun, I can't see you using it enough to be worth the bother. By the sounds of it, you have other heavy hitters that need some more loving, so spend some time with them. ;)

Oops! Just noticed the age of this thread. What did you end up doing anyway? lol
