8 oz to be exact, of garnet dewaxed for my M91/30 from shellac.net. The original finish was mostly gone, so I removed the last chips and cleaned up the stock to prep it for its new finish.

I don't want to use the whole package in one go, so how much of a shellac/alcohol ratio and amount will I need to complete one rifle? What kind of cut has anyone here used before?

For brushing use a 2lb. cut, ie. 2pounds shellac per 1 gallon (128 oz.) denatured alcohol. For spraying use a 1 lb. cut. After sufficient coats to get finish you want if it is too glossy you can burnish it with 0000 steel wool soaked in oil. If you did not already do it, before applying the shellac clean with 0000 steel wool and denatured alcohol.
 
15 coats of the stuff later, and I'm finally done.

I will avoid working with shellac at all costs in the future. :D

It came out pretty well, with a very deep brownish/red hue, that seems to change shade depending on which way you look at it. I'm pretty happy with the result.

I kind of like when the finish is all worn off. I try to buy Mosin Nagants like that and never put anything more on them. I do agree that putting more shellac on is like regular maintanance to a Mosin stock though.
 
Pics up, as promised. Keep in mind this in direct sunlight, so it's not as shiny as it appears to be. I knocked down the shine with 0000 steel wool and got rid of the cloudy-ness left behind with some rubbing alcohol. I may take it a bit further... but I'm afraid to wear down the coat too much.

All in all, I'm pleased with the result, and the new coat of shellac seems much more tough than the old stuff that would flake off if you looked at it wrong.

I added some felt shims to the front/rear of the barrel and the rear of both lugs, as laid out in a manual found here... somewhere. I've got about 50 rounds of Hornandy .312 interlock bullets (150 and 174) done up for the range next week. I also chucked the front sight in a drill and narrowed it down by half. The sight picture is actually usable now.

It's a 42 Izhevsk. The metal finish is... rough, to say the least, but the barrel is near pristine, though it slugs out at .312.

For anyone curious, I got the shellac (garnet, de-waxed) from shellac.net. It's expidited shipping staight to your door for under $20. Now I've got enough flakes to finish 10 rifles.

Did you have to make any special arrangements for the shellac. I was going to order it but it says it can't ship to my address. I live close to St Catherines. Did you have this porblem.

PS I removed all the old shellac off my MN. i'll post the before, mid, and after shots soon

Nope, no problems with shipping at all. Was it an issue with the form perhaps?
 
got it all resolved. its on its way. thanks

Now i just have to find denatured alcohol....checked all the hardware stores, paint stores and pharmacies in the area. nobody has it....I found 1 gal for $35 shipped from a stain place in Toronto at www.goudeymfg.com
 
Any pharmacy will have Rubbing Alcohol (Isoprophyl Alcohol) Just get the 90%+ pure stuff. Methyl Hydrate will work too.
