So, how do YOU open that 7.62x39 crate???(Crate Opening for Dummies.)

Real men use their teeth!

Lead? Pfah, lead's good for you; will put hair on your chest. Corkscrew? It's a tickler, that's what nanny says. Whoops, here comes mister jelly.

---

Seriously though; a hammer, a flathead screwdriver, a couple of careful whacks to make a hole and then a pair of tinsnips will get you through in a trice when you rip the damn rings off on accident.

first one I ever opened I wedged a hatchet under the lips on the corner and taped it down with a sledge hammer until one side fell off...worked great lol

Just bought a crate from the Army Navy store in Halifax... Hooked a wrench through the pins and cranked it with the handle of a socket wrench. Meant to snap a pic of the tin before it got all bent to hell but I forgot...

1)Solder gun; heat the edges a bit
2)Vise grips.

Run the solder gun up in front of the grips as you're turning. I dont have pictures but mine came out clean edged.
But it took me awhile to stare at it and figure out the best method without jamming up my fingers somewhere.

my crate was a little different

I just opened my 1200 round crate of 7.62x39 ammo. It was put together in 1984 and was different then the crate you got.

There was a steel band around the outside of the crate. Upon opening the box there was some tar soaked paper around the ammo. After getting through several layers of that there were four plastic bags of ammo. Each bag of ammo contained individual sealed plastic bags of stripper clips.

Must be a more modern way to keep the ammo dry.

It's a classic example of headquarters vs field troops. You can just see the (in this case, Czech) desk jockeys snickering.

"No, Milos, don't be stupid. Putting an opener in the box would make it easier for them to open."

"Not if we tell them that we've put the opener in every 25th crate, inside the tin..."

"But that would still give them openers, eventually."

"Not if we never put the openers in the boxes in the first place! They'll spend hours trying to figure out which one is the specially marked box."

"Love it!"

"Ha ha ha ha!"

"He's good!"

"OK, how about if we make the rings small enough that only their pinkie fingers can go in?"

"Ha ha ha ha!"

"Brilliant, Vaclav! And if we make the pull strips thinner, they'd be even more likely to break off in their fingers!"

"Oh, Marx! Stop it! You're killing me!"

"Wait, wait! How about this? If we make the edges of the tin sharp enough, we can apply for a bonus from the Central Committee for providing the troops with field razors at no extra cost!"

"Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!"

"It's gotta be worth at least a Lenin Prize, eh?"

"Ha ha ha ha ha ha!"

"So, that's settled. What's next on the list?

"Field toilet paper, comrade Chairman. Marko has suggested 60 grit..."

When I did mine picked it up dropped it on the corner of the crate tore off what I could, repeat dropping on corner opposite end finished tearing off the rest of the crate. Got a bullet pryed up middel ring put bullet thew it and pulled. Some go eazy one hand others require you standing on tin and pulling with 2 hands. Repeat the same for sides. If you do some how break a tab move to the next ones then pick it up and throw down hard on a corner. Dont worry ,if you do it enough times something will fall out and get you started that' s the grunt' way to do it! Don't over think it, it's field survival 101 do what you have to get the job done( KISS , keep it simple stupid) or you guys can do like you want, the vise grips are a good back up plan. The ham cans are way more fun to open. The tee opener( tool stuck to top) pry it off use what you got try not to bend it out of shape. Find the starter tab on side of the can pry it up a little ,slip on the tool and twist ( roll ) it around the can. If you some how do break the tab( you are screwed bud ) do what you got to to get the job done! Enjoy the experience .

Great post. There are some very helpful videos on YouTube as well for opening the 'spam' cans. Thanks again for sharing as I have to open mine still. :-(

Quick question, does anyone know where I can buy 7.62 x 39 ammo, already on stripper clips. BudgetAmmo had boxes of 1,200 mid-last year but I searched many suppliers over the last three days and no one seems to have surplus ammo already on stripper clips. I have 1,400 rounds from TradeEx but they are not on strippers clips. The reason for this request is I want the stripper clips and the ones packed with ammo years ago are the real thing - not a make shift knock off. The extra ammo will get used fairly quickly as well.

Thanks everyone!
