I am torn between a sks and a 10 22. Ultimately I am going to buy both, but not sure what I want first. I am going to post also in the rimfire thread so Not all opinions are biased. I am going to modify which ever i chose. I will be buying this week so i will be posting pics of my decision any help?

I would say, in my opinion, if you were gonna have just one rifle (for now), go for the center fire hard hitting one first.

Im a new owner and have both. I originally bought the SKS from Marstar with their "buy a case get an SKS for $75" deal. But like you I REALLY wanted both so before the SKS even arrived Id bought a 10/22. Before either arrived I had bought upgraded stocks and all kinds of parts for both. So, being that I did exactly what your thinking of doing, heres my opinion.

Buy the 10/22 first. Most will disagree but after having both I really wish id started with the smaller gun, shot it a bit then moved on to the larger gun. Getting both at the same time really solidified that, while the .22 is a great gun to have and just blast of tons of cheap rounds, it really doesnt give you that "kick" the SKS does. Some would say this is a reason to buy the SKS first, but I say, get the .22... let it entertain you for a while while you save up for the SKS. That way, you wont be disappointed when with the .22 when you get it. Here are pics of my 2 guns now... I love both, I shoot both all the time. I take both with me every time I got out and I don't regret having either. But the SKS really makes the .22 feel like a toy.

Seeing that you are a NBer, are you planning on doing a lot of off range shooting? If so, the 10/22 may be the better choice for your first purchase as it would get more use, due to our province's idiotic game laws. If you are going to stick to the range, the SKS is an excellent first purchase in it's own right.

I'm a newbie, so take my opinion with skepticism, but my research seems to indicate that the .22 is a better first gun, perhaps a bolt action even. However, the SKS is probably an excellent *second* gun. :)

My first rifle was an SKS.

Would I do it again? No, I don't think so. I would have gotten a .22 rifle to hone and develop my shooting skills some more before going the centerfire route. I do not regret getting an SKS at all, and it's one of my favourite rifles ever made and I now own three, but if I had to do it again I would have bought my Stevens Model 300 .22LR before my first Type 56 SKS. But that's just me.

If you want my advice, I'd say get the Ruger first along with a few mags with as much .22LR as you can afford to buy and shoot the heck out of it. Once you're more comfortable, the SKS is a fantastic choice for your first centerfire. It may shoot a 7.62 round, but it's a shorter 7.62 round and the rifle is overdesigned and heavy for the round it shoots, making recoil very mild. Getting an SKS earlier and shooting corrosive ammo will also help build gun cleaning skills that will be above and beyond for other rifles where there isn't a corrosive option. If you can get a rifle clean after shooting 700 rounds of filthy, commie corrosive surplus through it in one sitting, you can get any rifle clean.

Whatever you choose, remember to have fun! That's why we're all here.

I'd suggest buying the SKS and a crate of surplus ammo, if you've done some shooting before. If not, if you're totally new to shooting, I'd recommend the 10/22.

I am leaning toward the sks for now. I have done some shooting before, I am in the military and done a bit of hunting. But i will buy both eventually

Buy the SKS first. Just bought mine off the exchange here and, after field stripping/ cleaning, took it out to the range and wow! Is all I can say. Soooo fun! Gotta love the Russians!

There's two things that would make me suggest the .22 first for a new shooter (which may not apply in this case):

1) If you have to buy them one at a time because $ is an issue, get the .22 first since the ammo is cheaper and you better afford to both shoot your first firearm while saving for the other.

2) If you're new to cleaning firearms, the SKS cleanup is more involved, assuming that you're shooting milsurp ammo.

In any case, an SKS & .22 are good two choices for firearms IMO.

Well my Pal was processed and approved, waiting for my card in the mail. Ive decided to go with the sks first.. So as soon as i get the card I am going to pick one up. Or can you purchase without the card now that I am licenced?

I would buy a 22 first, and if you are a new shooter, i suggest an accurate bolt action rifle, so you get good feedback from each shot and learn how to shoot.

I see a lot of shooters who can only blast. They never learned how to hit what they aimed at. My favourite 22 plinker is a Savage.

Get the SKS it was my first gun as well, it's a hard hitting 7.62x39 one of the greatest rounds ever made, and they are fun as hell to shoot not to mention it has a bayonett and mine was made almost 30 years before I was born -- it's just a cool piece of history
