So I am buying my first new gun. a Ruger 10/22...syn stock/blued barrel. Is there any special considerations...treaments, etc I need to do to it first thing. A friend said strip completely, and clean it with brake clean or something specific. So from the all wise members of CGN, please educate me the newbie gun owner.

That just sounds bad...I'm not a newbie gun owner, just first brand new gun....LOL

Actually, the 10/22 will likely work pretty well out of the box. The complete strip down and degrease is usually done on milsurp guns packed in heavy cosmoline.

Check the barrel, and run a patch through it to clean out any packing oil, then go shoot the SOB until it's too dirty to work. Then go ahead and clean it.

Repeat the process until your local dealer calls you up for your ammo order, instead of you wiping him out.

good advice.........What about the extra's Ive seen out ther...mag realease, buffers, triggers.......what should I consider....I realize I have to shoot it and see where it needs help first

Exactly. Try it out, and make sure to have a few types of ammo. They take a little while to break in, so give it a few 100 rounds before ordering parts.

As for customizing, what are you going to use it for?

When you've got it broke in, take a look at the Volquartsen accessories to tune the trigger, magazine release, bolt release, sear, hammer, etc.

And when your really ready (I'm not there yet) get a new barrel, stock, and eventually your left with an original receiver, and that's about it. LOL.

Have fun, they're great little firearms to shoot.

They really seem to smarten up after the first brick so don't be discouraged if it goofs up a little at first. They also tend to be a litle picky on ammo, our 2 don't like Federal bulk pack but some do.

The 10/22 does't really need anything. After the first brick, think about a buffer and give the barrel channel a sanding then use a couple thicknesses of someone's business card at the chamber-end of the barrel to float the tube just above the wood, and get rid of the barrel band, if you have one.

I've heard that they can be picky beasts!! I plan on trying some different ammo. I've been told keep/get one with a barrel ring. Does it make that much of a difference?? Float the barrel...sound like a plan! To advanced for me...have to find a CGN'er close to me that workd for beer.....

Magazines - I plan on 2-3 ten rounders, maybe a couple of 25'ers. Steel lips.

Sask? gophers? forget the 10 rounders, 1 steel lips and a speed loader. Keep the factory 10 round mag as a spare in case those commie bastard gophers set up a charge!

IS rock ridge as good as harris?? The scope I am working on. Should I start an Uber-10/22 thread in Rimfire. I've found a bunch asking specific questions...possibly talk a mod into a sticky??
