The biggest drawback ...

to the MN family of rifles for hunting is the safety. Compared to the Mauser or Lee-Enfield it is more difficult to operate quickly and quietly with minimal movement. I prefer to stalk hunt and it's hard to beat the tang safety on a Savage 1899. The Lee-Enfield comes close, the Mauser's not bad but the MN is a distant third right along with Schmidt-Rubins. A safety that's difficult to operate doesn't get used leaving things open to all sorts of unpleasantness.

Other than the safety issue I agree with the earlier post that the rounds are pretty equal at hunting ranges and it comes down to what you feel most comfortable and confident carrying.

That's a pretty bold statement. MANY of the M48's that give the gun a bad rap are actually refurbs thrown together from used parts for the civi market. The nicer non-refurbs are really quite nice guns.

I've had probably 5 M48's now, including variants like the A and B models. 3 of them were EXCELLENT rifles, well made, well assembled, etc. 2 of them were less so. Oddly enough. the very late manufactured M48B's seem to be the best made. Also, the M24/47 rifles, despite being cheaper and refurbed, are generally better made rifles being refurbs of pre-war mausers.

I read that article. What a stupid article. He compared a refurbished to like-new Mosin with a beat up RC Mauser made of electropencilled mis-matched parts. Probably had a sewer bore too.

Comparing two examples against each other is not a scientifically significant comparison. And I'm evenb biased towards Mosins given that I have a ton of them...

I have a mauser, couple of Enfields, and a MN. they all shoot good, not great but good. All I've noticed is the ammo. Milsurp is just that, put some high quality rounds in any of them and they are accurate enough out to 200yrds and IMO way tougher than most commercial rifle, basically perfect for hunting. I have yet to have one of my Milsurp hunters to let me down in foul weather.

Stories of commercial rifles failing in bad weather while hunting from what I've heard (face to face by the guy whos gun failed) seems to be a combination of not knowing how to maintain the gun properly and not doing any check ups on the gun to make sure its "ready to go".
