So, I bought a big boy pistol...

No I inherited from my cousin. Came from Van Isle.

It has the sillywet front sight! 1-4 I am guessing for chickens, turkeys, pigs and rams?

Ok, just wondering. I picked up the same thing from Gunnar, it was perfect, mint, had the same front sight. Was advertised having an 8" bbl. Was I ever surprised when I opened the package and found a 10 incher. Never took it to the range as I couldn't find anything to transport it in. Was eventually traded for a 6" 29. Yup, that's one impressive gun! My wife laughed big time when I showed her that one.

Yah I heard about it too, something about an extension of something. I wish!

Please post when you clean that up so I can sleep at night.

Sheesh! Drama night haha. Here you go, hope it passes muster. Still need to do a bit of cleanup on the front of the rib.

With the original muzzle, I tried to duplicate the crown as much as possible, including the slight setback of the rib.

Here's a pic of the original, hopefully I got mine a little bit more square than this!

Its not exactly the same, I recessed mine quite a bit more. Hopefully won't be detrimental, and I've got some material to play with if I need to redo it. Looking at the stampings on the barrel, if I had gone 5" they would be almost perfectly centered front to back. Oh well.

Wish I had the knowledge and guts to pull it off

Not guts, desperation haha. I don't have the licence for a 4". This is how I look at it: I spent 800 bucks on this pistol, what's the worst that happens? Its not "collectable" anymore? The 8 3/8" 29 seems to be a relatively common variant so I figured it would make a good candidate. Plus, I'm confident that I can crown a barrel at least as well as the factory did on it (see my previous pics). I can't afford a factory 4.5 or 5" even if I ever find one for sale, so this is my next best option. All I need now is to find an original-style sight and its complete.

Here she is back together, waiting.

Time will tell with the crown, won't know if I wrecked it until I shoot it. Takes patience if you do it the way I did. You can buy crowning and chamfering tools from places like Brownells, but I'm not patient enough to wait for mail from the US. Plus they don't have one that will turn the profile I wanted.

The sight is pinned to the top rib, if its like my 17-3 I'll have to cut a relief in the rib to set the base tenon in and drill the pin through.

Figured I would post an update in case anyone's interested. No luck finding a replacement sight so far, and this pistol is begging to get taken for a test drive. Since I wanted a factory-type sight, I decided to reuse the one I cut off. Lot of messing around, but finally got it on.

Cut the barrel away from the sight:

After rough shaping a new sight tenon:

Barrel rib is cut, fit is ok. Not as good as a machine shop should be able to do, but I like messing around with this stuff myself:

Sight is bedded in jb weld (just to hold it and fill any gaps in the slot to tenon fit. After it cures I'll cross drill it and install a pin. Then it should be ready to take to the range.

Looks sharp nice job deadman!!! .. JB Weld does wonders i love that stuff... I would just shave the front of the crown off a hair then feather it in and it would look factory perfect unless you havent got enough meat left on it. Friend of mine was lucky enough to get the 29-10 that was factory scrolled measures 105.5 ml just over lucky Bastard LOL!!!

Haha, like I said, I only used it to fill the voids and hold the sight until pinning, I wouldn't leave it like it is for shooting (I know someone who jb'd his SBH front sight back on after shortening the barrel, it didn't hold.

As for the crown, I've been considering touching it up a bit but I'll wait to see how it shoots.

Well if it doesn't work out I will buy your grips lol!

Seriously I hope it works out for you.

Still curious how you crowned that barrel?
