The 2002 incident and one other were traced to the use of altered 30-40 Krag brass , the extractor groove leaving the case head weak. The Lee did not handle escaping gas well. I have used 220 Swift cases with success.
At the USN trials of 1894 which resulted in the adoption of the Lee no other succesful arms in production (Lee Metford, Mauser, Berthier etc) were entered.
