So I finally managed to get out fur fetchin' today. For christmas I got a Stevens 200 in .223 with the intentions of it being my dedicated coyote rig. Problem was i've been at university all since Christmas and never got a chance to take her any farther than the range. Seeing as I am on reading week I got an opportunity to go hunting this morning. Got out a little late and got to the first stand at around 11 am. I started calling with a cottontail distress call for about 30s to a minute. Then I waited a minute or two and did a sequence of yips and howls, then back to the distress calls. I set up with my back to a stand of trees, just along the edge of a field like clearing, with the wind coming into my face from the far side of the field. I had seen alot of yote tracks heading off in the direction of the far side of the field so I thought I could stay downwind of them and call them towards me. Spent about two and a half hours and went to three different stands in total trying for yote's with no success. It was rather unfortunate but oh well seeing as it was my first time out.
After lacking in the coyote department I decided to go for a walk with the shotgun and have a little look see around the area. I was walking along kicking some brush piles for bunnies when I found two deer carcasses right beside each other. I thought that was real neat, both had been picked clean by yotes (tons of tracks all around the area). Also found two cars, realistically you could've made one with the parts from both. Also found a few blown up propane tanks and a shot up jerry can. Unfortunately no bunnies either, not even any tracks.
All in all though it was a beautiful sunny day and I really enjoyed getting out, even though I came back empty handed. Hopefully next time the weather will be as nice and the animals will be more willing to come out and play!
Any tips on increasing the fare I take would be much appreciated.
