So I am patiently awaiting the arrival of my RPAL and while I wait I'm doing a little research to figure what I think I would like to buy and I can't believe how many 1911s are out there! I know the patents were generously sold off by Mr. Browning and thus anyone can produce them, but why are they so popular?

Since this OP's original thread got badly hi-jacked I thought I'd start this all over again.

Let's keep it nice, within the CGN General Rules for posting & ON TOPIC this time.

Thank you all in advance.

why 1911: because they make enough that almost everyone can find the right one for them. as well, highly customizable. and if it aint broke, don't fix it!

It's a tried and true classic designed by Mr. Browning himself. Proven in war and very customizable.

Seriously you gotta ask?

I can safely say, that to know 1911, was to love 1911. And to love 1911, was to know 1911...
Those who knew 1911, loved 1911, while those who did not know 1911, loved 1911 from afar.

I didn't really fall in love with 1911s until I really got to know my 1911. I find my self more and more shopping for upgrades and parts for my 1911s that I can do on my own. I am just the tinkering type.

I would describe 1911s as a ###y classy woman. The Audry Hepburn of guns... and almost the same age!

Im not a 1911 guy but I do own a few but people buy them becouse there is something for everybody high budget vs low budget, tactical vs target, old school vs new school,9mm vs 45 vs .22 vs 40 ect
There really is something for everybody.

Why is the sky blue? :)

IMO, they're "The 45" pistol. The design is old, it's heavy and capacity is low but it's a good design that is time (and war) tested. With so many manufacturers and aftermarket parts there are some variations in spec so keep in mind there is rarely such things are "Drop in" parts for a 1911.

They're popular because they have a large following in the USA, and the patent expired ages ago. Not to mention they are the granddaddy of semi autos.

You can get one in pretty much any caliber you want .22LR, 9mm, 38 Super, .38 SPL / .357 MAG, .40S&W, 10mm, .45ACP and I'm sure I'm missing some (I've heard of a conversion kit for 7.62x25mm as well)

It's a good all around gun, the capacity isn't an issue in Canada as we are limited to 10 and you can get 10 round mags for it so that's all that matters.

It's a tank and as such, eats up a lot of the recoil

Hollywood has glamourized it to such an extent, that it's known to everybody.
WWII, Korea, Vietnam, mobsters, MagnumP.I., the "Duke", the list goes on.
I think it's a main reason why everybody wants one.
And it's got something a Glock will never have..."character!"

You don't really believe that if GLOCKS were available back then, they still would've went with a 1911 ? I like 1911's as much as the next guy, but come on. I believe any soldier given a choice between the 1911 and a GLOCK , would pick the Tupperware all day long.

Check out other American Firearms forums. Even the 1911 forums. Most do not have a 1911 in the nightstand. It's almost always something else.

The the 1911 is great for what it was/is......but it is far from the ideal Pistol to have when you need it to go bang everytime.

The decent prices of 1911 and ammo combos avail and the norcs are cheap enough to see if 1911 platform is for you. If it`s not you can sell it for more than new in the EE...lol :)
