I wonder if the reason behind the 1911 being the most copied pistol goes deeper than "its a classic" or "its ###y." Maybe its because it is also one of the great products of recent history. Surely a part of it is manufacturers cashing in on the fact that people simply want them, but at the risk of getting trashed, I'll go out on a limb and say this: its a pistol that works. People complain that its an antiquated design, nothing has changed, "X" pistol or "Y" pistol is an innovation, you have to tune a 1911 to get it to work, etc.
Yes, the pistol is basically the same as it was when it was introduced and yes, other pistols are dead-reliable. I won't dispute that. I like 1911s because they fit me, I like them because of their history, I like them because my 70-odd year old GI pistol will keep pace with my new production commercial model. And like someone previously compared them to the small block Chevy, I can tinker with them easily myself if I see fit. That being said, I've never come across a 1911 that needed work in order to use it. People just like to tailor them to suit their needs, and if it is done right, I see no problem with that.

and THAT is why it's not just that a 1911 is nice, but why so many people own more than just ONE. it's a nice "open" design, you can mix-n-match parts from a variety of places, they use a common magazine, etc. you can find them in all-black, or all-stainless, or two tone, or reverse two tone, or with polished flats, or with aluminum frames, and so on and so on.
besides, it's a "MAN" thing to shoot a large caliber. even if a 9mm / 357Mag or a super-thin laser was made MORE deadly than the .45ACP, it's just somehow very masculine, primal, and findamentally satisfying to shoot a fat blob of lead downrange.
if someone made a 12ga handgun, many of us would own one in a heartbeat!!!
Let me get this straight. You talk about 45 being masculine, and that 9mm is less terminally effective than 45 which for all intents and purposes is equal, as its shot placement that matters not calibre. Anyway, you then yammer on about shooting the more potent 45 at the range? So explain how this better "more deadly" calibre is important for punching paper? As usual, you support your 1911 choice with rhetoric and machismo while ignoring any concept of practicality or reality. Thanks for the honest response.

I'll expose my bias. I own 5 1911s. The trigger is better or can be made better that glocks and the like. Police and military use Glocks because they are close to idiot proof. ( Although an officer in Gatineau recently demonstrated that nothing is idiot proof to a sufficiently talented idiot). 1911s can be made way more accurate than most modern combat pistols.
And it always appears to be the same ahole on here, what a piece of work lol.
