someone i know wants to give me an old S&W revolver and i just started browsing the picture thread in the antiques forum for the first time today!
I am still new to the firearms hobby and it really looks like alot of pistols on the pictures i've seen

so basically how do i find out if its an antique?
also in the case it is, do i have to tell anyone or i can just keep it and thats it?
finally i tried reading the stickies but it's getting late and my eyes are tired lol, so from what i understood, youdon't need to register an antique but can you actually fire it?
if yes is it only at an approved range ?
 
If it is reg. now, I think it must eather be deregistered then given to you. Or transfered to you & you deregister it. I;m sure the guys here are more up than me. Model, cal.,barrell length.markings & a pic. would make it easy.
 
You could call the cfc and speak to a tech. Just ask about the firearm in question (with relevant info) , they will tell you if it qualifies. Don't say you are in possession yet.

If you describe the piece with all the info and a pic if you can , lots on here can identify it as antique or not.:)
 
I believe if it is a top break model it is an antique because the frames were all made before 1899 even if it was put together much later. There are a few non topbreaks that qualify but not many.
 
Well if its a Top break Model that dont meen its Antique not ALL the S&W DA Frist models are Antique. In the USA they Are.

Our cut off is Dec 31st 1897

Not Dec 31st 1898 like in the USA.

Also if its a 44 40 its Not antique no mater when its Made.
If its 44 Russian you got a good chance its a perscriibed Antique.

Also depends on the Model if its a SA NM # 3 in 44 Russian its Antique all NM # 3 frames are Antique.
Not all S&W DA Frist models are Antique in Canada tho.
