I have a pistol that was purchased by an ancestor privately (wasn't issued) while he was a member of the 1st Colorado Cavalry. He wanted a backup piece I guess. The gun was manufactured in 1863, the Sand Creek Massacre was in 1864, and he was discharged from the military in 1865. So the time line seems to fit.

What is it? Can you go to Colt for a letter or look into the personal history of the people involved for correspondence or journals?

The 1851 Colt has been passed through my family since it was first purchased so I know the chain of custody of the piece. I have his actual civil war discharge papers showing what unit he was and when he was discharged.
