So I picked up a Baikal IZH-94MP .22 over .410

I picked it up yesterday at Epps for a good price and it should suit my needs for camping and hiking (I really wanted something in .22 Hornet over .410 or 20, but I digress). Anyway, it came with just the one full choke and the previous owner has ground the front post way down, I'm assuming because it was shooting funky as the rear sight is drifted hard to the left as well. So I'm wondering where I can pick up some other chokes for it, and also replacement parts such as the front sight post in case it's totally janked.
It's definitely a really neat little gun. The cocking mechanism is very intriguing.

Cheers!

Thank you! Ah, well I handled the M42 at the Sportsmen's show and to be honest, it felt like rubbish to me. I mean, nice and light for sure, but overall it felt more like a pellet gun from Canadian Tire than something I'd take out on a hike. Not to mention I was able to pick this particular piece up for significantly less than the M42 is selling for (plus they don't seem to actually be in stock anywhere yet).
I can't remember off hand, but I think you need tools to break down the Savage as well, whereas with this it comes apart just like any other O/U or SxS shotgun.

Go to know. I've been looking at the 42 for a while. Also the .223 over 12 ga by Baikal. I'm very interested in combination firearms.

Anyhow. Thanks for the info!

Are the barrels regulated? My buddies shotgun barrel hits a yard from the rifle barrel. An older 24 in .410x.22 is bang on.

I did a quick and dirty bore sighting earlier and then just did a bit of off-hand shooting with the .22 tonight and it seems to shoot about bang on with where the very-difficult-to-see front post points at 20m. I'll take it out again on sunday and see how the shotgun barrel is relative to the iron sights. I bought some 000 buck too so I'll see how that patterns and report back. I would really like to get a set of chokes for it, I suppose I aught to email Baikal Canada...

Pardon the Instagram, but I took some friends out this afternoon and they really enjoyed shooting it as well. Money well spent I'd say :D

So having got some trigger time with it now, any further updates to add? (Aside from what you've already added above)

Not thus far. I did email Baikal last night about chokes and possibly finding a high-viz front sight to replace the current post. Otherwise I won't be able to get out with it again until tomorrow some time.

Do they even make .410 chokes?

I would LOVE to get this gun...but would like to see benched rifle shot groups at 25 and 50 yards as well as the shotgun patterns and it its to the same POA/POI as the rifle.

I already have a .410 single shot and shoot it a lot so I know its "limits" and I have a .22LR bolt gun...would just like a combo with twice the versatility for hiking trips and hunting for the small game pot fillers. :)

I had a Baikal SxS in the past...was not overly pretty but was bomb proof as all hell so I know Baikal's are good in that department.

From the factory they come with three chokes (F, M, IC) and apparently colonial arms makes Baikal/Remington Spartan threaded .410 chokes. I emailed CA this morning so I'll report back when they get back to me.
I'm just about to go out and toss it in the lead sled to see what I can get it to do. I have some #6 Remington 2.5" and #4 Winchester 2.5" I'll pattern as well from the full choke.
I also tossed a bit of white-out on the front sight for the time being to improve visibility. The problem is that the previous owner ground it not only flat, but also angled it for whatever reason.
Anyway, I'll get back with some results shortly.

Well colour me impressed! Ten round groups, taken at 25 yards benched in a lead sled for consistency. The first few shots of Blazer I was playing around with the sled trying to get it to sit right, which is why I think there are some weird fliers that you don't see in the other groups. Anyway:

Again, with the Winchester CB Long match I adjusted the sled a couple times while shooting because it wasn't sitting quite right after I shifted it down.

I'm very happy with how the .22 shoots at 25 yards for sure. I won't be able to get out and do 50 yards until later this week due to the snow.

Now, I patterned the .410 barrel. Winchester 000 buck (three pellet), Winchester #4, Remington #6, all 2 1/2" shells. Point of aim is approximately the dot I sharpied.

I fired two of the buckshot just to get a little average going. It patterned... okay. You can see that only 5 of the 6 pellets landed on the target, and I'm not sure where the 6th went. I'm extremely interested to see how it will fare with a larger choke and if it will change the point of impact and grouping.

At 25 yards neither the #4 or #6 patterned very well at all, but they did seem to hit just slightly low of POA compared to the buckshot which was hitting extremely low. I didn't take a photo, but closing in an approximate 5 yards (with the #6 at least) improved the pattern dramatically. Much more consistant and tight.

And finally, to give you an idea of how the sight picture looks with the super small front post painted temporarily white. I'll probably get some bright orange model paint if I can't find a fibre optic front post or something to that effect.

That's good information. Thanks for that!
You're welcome! Like I said, I'll try and get it out to 50 this week once some of the snow is melted away.
In regards to the pattern of birdshot; I wont shoot at anything alive further then 15y with my Cooey .410 (full choke). Thats as far as i can push it and get a reliable kill.
Yep, I certainly wouldn't be comfortable past 15-20yds.
Any other loads I should test as far as the .410 goes? Do 3" shells make much of a difference?

Awesome shooting review, thanks!!! Looks like I may be grabbing one!!!

One last test idea...shoot both barrels without moving the gun to see how they line up with each other? So we know that if we miss a shot with the .22 barrel...the .410 will be going in (roughly) that same spot, especially on flushing/running targets!!!

Ah good plan! I'll do that when I take it out again.

I have an M6 Scout on it's way to me. It's in 22 Hornet over 410. I saw a video on them and I just had to have one for trail carry sled/quad/Jeep. It may arrive today, my fingers are crossed! I would probably perferred it to be 20 ga, but I don't believe they come in that. As far as I Know they come in 22LR or 22Hornet over 410. Springfield Armory developed them for survival of pilots that have been downed. All metal and almost indestructable with ammo storeage in the top off the butt stock. They brake down into two with the removal of a pin. I can hardly wait for it to arrive.
