You have an old sporting conversion of a Lee Enfield Mk. I* rifle. Often referred to as a Long Lee Enfield. How long is the barrel. Looks as if it was rebarrelled with a BSA barrel. IIRC, the /l\U mark is South African; may be wrong. From the proofs, might have been done in Britain.

Just like it says.......MK1 Long Enfield. Sporterized stock and butt plate (nice checkering)......possibly re barrelled or cut down ? Not worth a lot to a collector. But a fine shooting rifle none the less I bet.......

The barrel is 29 1/2 inch's long, and the only marking's in the channel area are here.

Do they all have smooth,single stage trigger's?

yep, they're all single stage. Unlike the later ones, the trigger has a horseshoe & it fits in the saddle of the trigger sear. That's why they make a nicer sporter than the #1 Mk. III's

Mfg. at/by Enfield as per butt socket, possibly sportered by BSA(?), hence the three crossed rifles on the barrel. I have a similar rifle, an 1893 L.S.A. MLM that was re-barreled to Enfield rifling, rebuilt to CLLE in 1911 by VSM, and finally sportered by BSA(?).

As I have said before, these old rifles drip history and lore. Nice catch.
