Hello from Newbie....So finally I want to build my own precision rifle.

Nothing fancy, just 308win on Savage action. I can get barrel from Jerry and Obtunded. I can get stock from a number of suppliers.

The question is the action:

1, How can I get a Savage action? By ordering a 243 Steven rifle or there is another way?

2, Do I need to bed the action onto the stock? Or original screw is good enough?

3, Is there any way I can get hold of a Savage single shot action? I like the concept of single shot.

Thanks in advance!

ellwood eps has some actions on their website
bedding is a must
what are you trying to build? with the sellection of rifles on the market today you can probably get one off the shelf .much cheaper than building

You can turn any Savage or Stevens action into a single shot.

Triggers on the other hand are not as plentiful.

There are a variety of articles on my website in rifle tech that you may find interesting.

Just my opinion then. Do not build a 308. Build something that is more forgiving at longrange.

Absolutely..... Build a 6BR, Brass is easy to get, bullets are cheaper, it uses less powder, it is inherently VERY accurate, it has a fraction of the recoil and it is damned easy to make work. In short, It will teach YOU how to be a better shooter.

I have and do shoot mine at long distance all the time.

So 6mm BR it is. What action should I buy? 308? 243?

Sorry for such a lousy question from a newbie.

If you are buying to strip for an action, some calibers are better then others for resale of the bbl, so keep that in mind. Also, make sure you know which screw spacing you are buying, savage has a few variations.

Cheers

How about a Remington XR100 single shot in a 22:250? It comes with a great thumbhole laminated stock with a wide front forend, and you can take off the barrel and sell it to anyone with a remington action. Just install a
6mm barrel, a little action truing and you have the option of installing a Jewel trigger or just adjusting the factory trigger.....:D

Sorry for such a lousy question from a newbie.

Any non magnum action and any action not designed for a .223 bolt face will do.

243, 308, 22-250, 338 federal, etc etc.

FYI, Lyle1's recommendation is stellar. This is one SWEET rifle and action. All you need to do is add a barrel and you are set to go. There are dozens of these converted specifically to 6BR since the factory stock, trigger and action are darned good. Between CyaN1de and I I think we have a half dozen alone.

I'm also a big fan of the 260 AKA 6.5mm-08. I have a 260AI and love it, but the regular 260 is a fantastic cartridge. It is a great balance of velocity and bore wear where you can take advantage of the superior ballistics of the 6.5mm VLD and SMKs.

6BR is a great cartridge though and I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

Like others the 260 Rem is a fine choice for a very versatile cartridge.

I had a Savage Model 12 VLP in .204 Ruger, got a prefit Shilen barrel from Jerry, a Rifle Basix trigger, did my own bedding job and developed a load that printed regularly in the 0.3-0.4" range.

It was great on gophers out past 300 meters but sadly I had to sell it when our economy took a turn for the worse. If thing turn around I want a .260AI barrel and a .204 Ruger barrel but for now life is paycheck to paycheck.

However that experience turned me into a huge Savage fan, barrel swap requires only a headspace gauge and barrel wrench, no need for a lathe.

Good luck with your build

Please explain why you think a 260 is "more versatile"? I also shoot with one and I achieve great results, but on the balance, I am not seeing the versatility thing.
