I am not afraid to say that I am completely uneducated in this category of firearms. If I were looking for a black rifle that was capable of shooting .223 (heavier bullets 69grain and up) and that could be scoped, what rifle would be a good platform to build around at a moderate price?

I am always tempted to jump on something on the exchange forum but I'm figuring the construction or modification of these rifles is a process of personal choices.

i'm new to this 2, just got my cz 858 t, nonrestricted
at lever arms, theres several norinco .223 starting at 599,
a bushmaster at around 1500, and the new norinco type 97a is on sale at 1450 if u like bullpup design....

The norinco could not handle anything over 55, I can be wrong, but I think they have 1/12 twist.

The bushmaster has 1/9 - you are limited to 69gr , some may stable certain 75gr bullets but that's luck of the draw.

You have to find a barrel in 1/8 or 1/7. THis limits you to Colt, LMT and certain offerings of STAG and CMMG, as well as certain higher SS version of Armalite.

I had a look on arms east at the stag model 3r. (the model 2t carabine was makred unavalable) This seems to suit my needs pretty closely. I also own and shoot a savage 12bvss that has a 1 in 9 twist so sharing bullets might work out.

Anyone own a Stag model 3r? Or is comparing one vs another essentially the same thing except different stocks and barrel lenghts?

You can order Stag 16" Carabine or 20" Rifle with 1/7 twist barrel.

Contact Walter (Dangertree) on the board here. He is a Stag dealer.

+1

I heard good things about Stags. I read some Pat Sweeney's books and he's fond of 'em. I'm currently in the process of getting one... the girlfriend is going to freak out... well you only live once!

I would recommend a 1:7 twist. You can shoot all the goodies with that.

Think that equation works out quite nicely. It's always nice to hear some positive comments before spending that kind of cash on a new rifle.

Ya, it's big money, but sooooooo worth it! You can't go wrong with an AR15.

Let me tell you a story : I went to a Montreal gunshop to MAYBE get a handgun (first buy ever). I pretty had my mind set on a HK USP... the clerk who was taking care of me, showed me his tatoo and said " you look like a guy who would love that kind of rifle and we got one left" (his tatoo was an AR15). I went bezerk, because I thought they were unobtainable up here. He took the Armalite LEM15A4 out of the carboard box and showed it me. I took a glance at my girlfriend and she said " Come on Pat, you know you want it!". To make a story short, I ended up buying a HK USP 9mm AND the Armalite... It was a heck of a first buy!

I don't regret a single thing and I LOVE my AR15. Since then I've upgraded it and it's my favorite piece. Cool thing with ARs is that they are easy to work on and customize plus you can build one from parts to really suit your needs.
