so i was lying in bed the other night and i started thinking that i would like an AR. but i have a beef with them.

1. although .223 is decently cheap to shoot its not as cheap as it could be.
2. its restricted, therefore not allowing me to shoot on my property.(this part i think i may be able to get over)

so i started thinking about building one, i can pick up a dpms lower for 300$ then im sure i can find the rest of the various parts and finally build one up to the way i want it. now the thinking really set in, why cant i build one in 7.62x39? buy an aftermarket barrel that is 7.62x39, buy a bolt. now im not knowledgeable to know enough about bolt refacing or anything like that, so is it possible to find a bolt made for a 7.62x39 round or is it possible to have one reworked from .223 to fit x39?

or is all of this not even feasible and its just easier and cheaper to have one in .223?

nate.

Just buy a non restricted VZ 58. Seriously, with the aftermarket parts now available you'll have a rifle that will take almost all the modern conveniences of an AR and for a lot less money.

The other alternative is to buy a dedicated AR upper and lower, I know some companies make them in the US. But you have to ask yourself why you need an AR??

Get the 58, you'll be happier in the long run.

i hate the look of the 58. nothing against you 58 lovers and owners i just cant stand the looks of them. why do i need an AR? idk. but i want one lol. i dont need a lot of things i have but i want them :D.
xcrs are a kinda pricey, and as far as i have heard, and this may be wrong but they kinda lack in the department of accuracy.( i may be horribly wrong)

TNW upper sold by Marstar. Check in their "new items" section.

I can understand you not liking the looks of the VZ, personally I really like the shorties but the long barrel looks a bit awkward. However, as far as the XCR goes, if you are so worried about accuracy you should not be looking for a rifle in 7.62x39. Even though I dont own an XCR, I would assume the rifle would be far more accurate than that cartridge.

I searched this project a year ago. A few month ago a guy started a thread on this here.

From my research, here are the main points:
-Armalite, (DPMS?) and some others makes complete x39 upper
-for corrosive ammo you might be better building or customizing one with a piston system to keep the #### out of the receiver
-with the larger case head, bolt is the weak point. LMT x39 bolt is the one that won't break.
-with the case bevel and the straight magwell it's very hard to design a full lenght mag. Actually there's no x39 5/30 mag available. 5/10 mags are cheap and reliable.
