Me and the old lady are heading to victoria in a few weeks and after camping just this last weekend near home I decided to bring a gun with me. First of all a group of random people started yelling and swearing in the middle of the night near the tent, kind sounded like they were all drunk and wanting to tear the place up. Next was a bear "F"ing around near the tent at 4 am just after I got up and took a leak. Now it didnt bother me that much but it freaked out the old lady to say the least. So I decided to bring the 870 with me, just incase a cougar or hippie trys to attack me while im camping along the way. I dont think there is anything illegal bringing your gun with you as long as its locked and not in any national park (correct me if im wrong). Now me question is what should i be packing with me? Slugs or buckshot? I have a 3'' mag 12 gauge with a screw in modified choke. I removed the plug to fit in a few extra also. Should a guy say screw the scatter gun and just bring the .22 or maybe rifle instead?

Yea I wish I had a tactical shotgun..... but cant justify spending more money on guns this year. Its kinda long to be packing in the tent but it will do. Can a guy shoot slugs with a modified choke or should i switch it out to something else?

non resticted does not have to be locked, but must be locked in the trunk or out of sight in a locked car/truck when unattended.

I like buckshot becouse if its attacking in a campsite theres other ppl around and i really hate to see a slug pass thru and possibly ricochet and hurt someone. slugs are for finishing off the animal after its ranoff.

I've heard of this national park rule of no firearms, i emailed the CFC and told them i'm going to alberta and back with firearms and they said as long as i follow the proper transport rules and have my licence and registration i can travel any where in canada with them. i would'nt push this, theres some back door law ready to screw us.
and as we know we pass thru national parks to go from bc to alberta.
OH a can a bear spray and bear bangers are good for camping too.

but this is all just my two cents
hope you have a good trip

the rcmp site says that you can keep ammo nearby but not loaded when used for protection.. is this true?

oh and almost forgot.. i would go with buckshot mainly because of the safety factor.

Bear Bangers can be a bad thing if you overshoot the bear.... and that would.. well.. suck...

CHARGE.......

Don't use bear bangers from ANYTHING other than a cylinder bore shotgun. They can stick in the choke, and that would REALLY suck. I'd say both slugs and buckshot. If a bear attacking is a legitimate danger, have the slugs ready. You want as much energy, and as big a hole as possible to stop Smokey, when he's at conversation distances.

All I gonna say about the hippies, is use your best judgement, unless the world ends, the sun is gonna come up in the morning, and you don't want to do anything you can't perfectly justify.

Like I said to the "canoe guy"...

I would take a stainless 10/22 carbine with Butler Creek side folder & scope. Also pack 4 X Butler Creek Steel Lips 25 rnd mags. I would keep 1 full mag of Stingers and the rest filled with Winchester High velocity HP 333 pack. Take another 333 pack along if you are worried about a large zombie sympozium. Also may want to clamp a nice light on it for night movements...

I went and picked up 20 rounds of 3'' 00 buckshot, should be more than enough for my needs. Was looking at a few short barrels, $250 for used short barrels. One was a rifled one with scope mounts, the other with rifled choke tube. Might as well buy a different shotgun all together if i want a tactical one.

As for have ammo available but not loaded...it's not going to do you much good if Yogi comes through the tent. As far as know (which isn't much), the firearm is in use and can be kept loaded as long as you are in the direct vicinity. When you leave the tent or camping area, unload and lock in the trunk. When I camp, not in a national park, I have the shotgun loaded, chamber empty with the action fired. That way it's a simple pump and you're ready to go. Someone please correct me if I'm way off on this!!
