So I'm thinking about getting a gun

So here is my introduction. There's coyotes killing my cats and everyone elses cats in my area. I decided I would make some coyote's life hell by getting a pellet gun and leaving a nasty pellet-welt on him next time he comes around to scare him off.

As a kid I used to shoot those old split-barrel single shot pellet guns, which suck. I looked a little further and got a multi-shot Co2 Nightstalker. The hassle is that any pellet gun worth a damn is now categorised as a firearm. In order to buy one I will have to take the commie PAL obstacle course, which is fine but it's like $250 (Is that tax deductable?) and two days.

Anyway, one thing led to another and I find myself looking at AR-15s and M-14s. I always end up going all the way on these things. Never been much of a gun person, just went to out shooting .22s and .410s for fun when I was a kid (guns were a lot less restricted back in the 1970s). Never got much fun out of killing things either. I'm just looking for a nice practical gun to do a little shooting at the firing range. Home defense would only be a remote add-on benefit.

I'll still only use the pellet gun to scare off the coyotes though.

For the record, I disagree with current gun laws. I never knew it was such hell to own one now. Ridiculous. It's encouraging to see you have a nice lively forum here. Lots to read.

BTW, I'm in commie Ontario, Canada's most hated province.

:)

...and you have already demonstrated that you have the infection. Started off looking for a pellet gun and wound up looking at AR's and M14's.

Sorry to hear about your cats.

If you can actually see the coyotes you might be able to hit it with a pellet. That will make it stay away when you are around in the daylight, only. You might want to find something at a higher level to save your pets.

"...Is that tax deductable?..." No.
"...use the pellet gun to..." Doing that will likely be illegal. Most municipalities have firearms discharge prohibitions that include air/CO2 powered rifles.

Get you PAL pal.....and maybe a new collar for you cat! Black cat's are harder to spot at night as well!

My municipality has a no-hunting bylaw and discharging "all classes of firearms" is prohibited.

But, pellet guns and BB guns under 500fps are not classified under the Criminal Code as firearms to my understanding. Under the Fish and Wildlife Act, as a property owner I am allowed to harass, kill and trap nuisance wildlife that are on my land. Coincidentally coyotes are mentioned often.

So as I understand it, I cannot shoot the Coyotes with a firearm but I can make their lives damn miserable with a pellet gun, such that they won't want to come back.

If that doesn't work, when I get my PAL I will get a hunting license and go looking for them. I have a feeling ipscgraz is right, that the coyotes are cunning and they'll find a way around me.

I thought so also until I was informed in no uncertain terms (by a couple of internet cowboys) that the 500 FPS rule is only to remove the requirement to register the "firearm."

A "firearm" is anything with a barrel that launches a projectile, basically, so if you are withing city limits a pellet gun is possibly against local bylaws.

Get a PAL, pal. And while you're at it, get the RPAL.

The more PALs are in circulation, the harder it is for the government to take away this freedom.

Life is hectic, there are all sorts of obligations we have to carry out, and who can find the time for a weekend course, and who can find the time to educate themselves about all the various laws, storage issues etc....

It seems overwhelming when you start. At least it did for me. But just do it, because a year or two or 10 from now it might become even harder, or impossible.

I agree 100%. From what I have read lately, it is clear what the left wing and the police agenda is for Canadian guns: They want to outlaw them, ALL of them.

Gonna enroll in the course for January.

Good luck on your course OP. We need as many people with PALs as we can get. I've introduced numerous people to firearms this year alone and at least 3 have got their PALs because of it. I'm hoping to double that number by this time next year.

ipscgraz is right though. Coyotes are pretty smart little buggers. Even if you don't enjoy killing them, i'm pretty sure that's what you're gonna have to do. They're are a lot of different products out there that can help ya. Good luck.

Get your PAL and then start shopping on the EEs for a 22-250 or a 223. You don’t want to scare the coyotes, you want to obliterate them, and preferably from a distance that they don’t see it coming. :D

I’m not sure about that. I think Ontario is a wonderful place…… most of the time.;)

"...pellet guns and BB guns under 500fps..." Discharge by-laws have nothing to do with FA definitions and include these. Most include archery too. Get a copy of your local by-laws and read it.

Our municipal bylaw defines firearms, but excludes those deemed not to be firearms under the Criminal Code. Therefore I could discharge a pellet gun that shoots under the prescribed fps under the Criminal Code. Just be careful - I'm not sure if Careless Use deems it to be a firearm or not.

Under definitions

.......but does not include bows, which are defined separately, or any weapons not deemed to be firearms in accordance with the Criminal Code.
