So I'm thinking of a shotgun.

I am a fan of Ithacas myself. One of the more useful models is a 1997 built Turkeyslayer. 23 inch barrel isn't too bad at all because it feels different with thicker barrel to accommodate changeable chokes, makes it feel artifically longer. My own favorite choke is Imp Mod by Colonial, with a subdued goldish finish and knurled half inch for no tool swap out. The factory cam paint job adds another layer of weatherproofing. Of course it's three inch magnum.
Is the first series of Turkeyslayer (M87) so the barrel is removable.

Your best choices are the Remington 870 or the Mossberg 590. For a first gun I'd stay away from the J.C. Higgins, Winchester Model 12, High Standard and other guns that are long out of production. There's nothing wrong with them but replacement parts and tacticool accessories are more readily available for the Remington and Mossberg.
