Getting my barrel cut down to 18.5" later this week and I'm in the middle of taking it apart to speed the process for the smith.

I can't get this damn flash hider off, and until it comes off, of course I can't disassemble the gas system etc. I would like to bring in nothing but the receiver and barrel. I am, after all, paying by the hour!

So can I just hack off the end of the barrel, removing the flash hider and thus making the disassembly all possible?

Or is there some reason I can't think of that this would be a really bad idea?
 
Corlanes in Dawson Creek just cut mine down and put a target crown on the barrell without diassembling the gun(except for stock) for $50.00. I would think a good smith with the right tools could do yours too. (Note: I had a rifle sight put on instead of the flash hider so machining threads wasn't necessary, thus it was cheaper. I also don't hunt at night in trenches and stuff so i don't need a flash hider, and I want the gun as compact as possible for hunting.)

At night I hunt zombies, so I need the flash hider. I know they need the barrel off to do whatever's required, anyway.

I can't see why cutting the barrel would be illegal?
 
Wile I don't know what gun your planning on chopping(suspecting norinco m305?). Im just curiouse if it has a crome bore? And is there any issues with cutting into that, and trying to crown it?
 
I asked the guy's at Corlanes and they said no problem on the chrome bore, they have a full machine shop, sharp carbide tooling so no chipping ect., and they did not disassemble the gun other than remove the stock to do it.
 
The Norc flash hider takes quite a bit of pounding, but it can be done with a big enough hammer. Don't give in to it, just keep pounding.
 
If the barrel is going to be shortened, crowned, threaded, etc., there is no harm in just cutting the barrel, rather than going to the bother of removing the welded on flashider. The flashider can't be reused on the shortened barrel, because the indexing grooves will be gone. Rather than cutting the barrel, then sending it to the gunsmith, I'd just send the unaltered barrel/receiver unit. The 'smith can amputate easily enough.
As far as the chrome lined bore is concerned, use a sharp lathe tool, and cut from the bore outwards, to crown.
KING AK - A semi auto centrefire rifle barrel can be shortened to 18 1/2"+ without changing the classification of the rifle. Barrel length is measured from the face of the closed bolt to the face of the barrel. Better let the 'smith who is doing the crowning do the cutting, to avoid any chance of a mixup.
 
My first thought was to drill out the welds and tap it off. Unfortunately, before making this post, I went to drill out the welds last night, but no luck: I lent out the only drill bit set capable of handling the job a few months ago and forgot to get it back! Woops! Also I don't have a dremel tool - but I think I will buy one later this week now that this has happened. Would have been useful!



I think I will just cut it off.

I have a Norinco barrel already cut down with a target crown and tapped for a scope in front of the barrel.. I will trade you straight up for yours, I am trying to keep mine 1960's looking, and the Leatherwood looks awfully dumb with no flash hider.

Please please please, (ok, enough begging,) give me a shout back!!!!
