A few months ago, I acquired a sporter No1MK3*, which bears the not-too-common "NRF" mark. Granted, it's not pristine - some minor specks of rust, bore is ok but not stellar; but, it's number-matching (bolt, receiver, barrel, rear sight), and it is a NRF after all, so it surely must deserve to be de-sporterized, right? (in my very humble opinion).

Ok I admit, it does have a forend which proudly wears the infamous ishy-screw, but beggers can't be choosers; that was a forend in good shape and - more importantly - I had it in my shop.

Still don't know how it shoots, but hoping to find out this coming weekend (if it's not -30 degrees and if my bronchitis gives me a break).

Cheers!

Lou

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Out of curiosity why do Enfield collectors make such a fuss about the Ishy screw?
Also good job on the restore

Eaglelord, the Ishy screw is a modification which was brought in a a later time, as a way to avoid splitting of the forend in front of the king screw; so a SMLE dated from WW1 shouldn't be seen with it. It's a bit of a historical "faux pas". But it's an insurance against unfortunate cracking :)

Lou

Lou, you could delete the Ishy screw too if you wanted. I did that on my own restored NRF. Peter Laidler did a write up on how to plug and blend it in the milsurps library.

I think it's largely a matter of what you like. Many of the rifles DID serve all over the world, many of them through the Second War, too, so lots of time for a screw to be installed.

Lou, if you are ever out this way, do drop in. I have a completely-unmolested NRF here you can try out. It shoots 1 inch on the button for me.

Yours looks better, though! Nice job on the restoration!

Thanks Flying Pig, indeed you do have a fine-looking NRF, saw your thread in milsurps.com - very nice work on that one.

I may keep the forend as-is though, having too many other projects ahead of me! :) (ok I am lazy)

And Smellie, I sure wish I lived closer to AB. A day shooting with you and your buddies would be quite a memorable experience (even if I wouldn't bring my Snow White costume). I'll have to make this trip happen, sooner rather than later...

Lou, Smellie lives in Manitoba.Flying pig and me live in Alberta.I think Manitoba would be a perfect meeting ground for all of us.You can bring your bits and pieces along with the rest of us.Just think Ross rifles and almost every Lee Enfield and all the bits and pieces we have collected. One big swap meet.We would just have to find a venue or someone with enough land that we could all get together.Perhaps We could even put on a shoot!!

Yeah, now I see I indeed that I didn't get Smellie's province right. Bronchitis must have side effects in my brain!

That idea of meeting in the middle sounds great!

Beauty rifle Lou & my favorite model of LE.
Ye forgot to tooth brush out the sawdust in all the wee spots before takin' the pics though....:p
Hope the bugger shoots good.

Yes indeed, once I saw my close uf pics I realized I missed that important step! I will finish the cleanup soon enough.

Can't let any detail slip by you guys, can't I. :D

Nice rifle! What does NRF stand for?

Don't you bunch of pirates dare meet without me! We did have a "field day" last summer, a sort of informal milsurp meet. We even managed to fire off a few rounds out of some our rifles.

I really hope that the meet and greet happens again in the future. I'd really enjoy a chance to meet all the great people I've bumped into here.

Lou, your restorations always look really natural, like they were actually FTR'd. Mine always look more forced. I think this student still has a long way to go to catch our resident Master Restorer!

I'll have to twist Smellie's arm and see if we can get another milsurp day at wolverine going. I'd be happy to volunteer again and help get everything set up. Last year was a blast and I think we had at least 100 rifles spanning 200 years and dozens of conflicts there.

Lou, as always your restos are great!! I wish incould get my no1 resto going but the price of wood keeps it from happening.

I have an NRF sporter as well that I bought from Goldidig, and what a shooter it is! These are supposed to be rare, yet there is a number of them just here in this thread.

Seems like most of them have turned up here and I think New Zealand. Actually, I was lucky enough to wind up with a Parker-Hale sporter built on an SSA SMLE as well.

Tinman, if the weekend they pick and the planets all align Nicki and I would be glad to come out and spend some time with all of you guys. We'd really be in for helping out however we could.
