I'm obviously new to all of this.

People keep talking about patterning their gun, what the hell does that mean anyways?

Also if you have any other shotgun, or general firearms terms i should know PLEASE post them.

It means shooting at a piece of paper, and measuring (roughly) how spread out the shot is, at the distance you want to shoot. You need a certain number of pellets to kill a bird or a clay, you do this to ensure your gun is properly choked to deliver the performance you require.
Another term you need to know is "zombie defense." This is what you tell the 19 year old girl, at the walmart sports counter, what the 5 boxes of buckshot and 4 boxes of slugs are for (after you've guided her pointing finger to which ones were the buckshot).

Patterning is just checking the spread of pellets at various distances.

The most misused term is 'clip'... It's incorrectly used to describe box type magazines, stripper clips are actually used to reload the magazines of certain rifles without having to detach the magazine from the action.

And don't forget "TACTICAL", it means turning our guns into a more "tactical" weapon for use during "tactical" missions or drills, but since we civilians will 99.9% NEVER be in a real "Tactical" situation, it means just make it look MUCH MORE MACHO!

In a paradoxical twist on typical standards of measurement, the shorter the barrel the longer your dink. This is without a doubt the most critical factor to keep in mind when choosing the scattergun for you.

speaking of shotguns, tactical, and zombies, i invite you to check out these threads on the photo gallery for some ideas:

chokes will make your head spin a bit.. I wont go there for now.

cheers,

patterning is simple, at apr 30 yd hang a paper with a 30 in circle. A center aiming point, and area around the circle. Shoot at the aiming point then check your target. The majority of the shot will show where the gun shoots. It may be up down left or right. Try this with different brands & shot size. Your gun will show you what it likes. This will save you lots of ammo & missed birds. Also look for holes in the pattern. Hope this helps. PS reloading manuals have a vast storage of the language we use. AJ
