I live in BC and have just discovered hunting.

I do not know much, but have some very good mentors.

One thing I am finding is that everyone has their own very solid opinions on what is a good scope.

I recently purchased a Browning X Bolt 300 Win Mag.

I intend to hunt moose, deer and if I am lucky, elk.

Please give me your opinions on what scope I should get.

Right now the front runner is the Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x40 or x50 with a RZ 800 recticle.

I want to keep my spending to under $1000.

Cheers!

For big-game hunting, get a Leupold FX3 6x42 with LR duplex reticle, and call it a day. If you are the kind of guy that will practice shooting a whole bunch out to 600 yards, then send the scope to Korth in Okotoks, AB to have an M1 knob installed on the elevation turret.

If you're going to shoot targets and small varmints at long range, and you don't mind the extra weight and bulk when you're carrying the rifle, then the Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14 is a good scope, as is the Sightron SIII line (based on the reports on this site and others), and the Vortex Viper PST is also a great scope. All of these can be had for under $1000.

An important element to scope selection is how it affects the balance and handling of the rifle. You don't want a scope that is so front heavy that it causes the rifle to be front heavy, as well. A rifle that balances on, or slightly in front of, the front action screw is pretty well regarded as a rifle that comes up to the shoulder naturally, and points wonderfully.

Vortex Viper HS 4-16x50 if you want the big bell. Get the BDC reticule. Has a 30mm tube, side parallax adjustment and capped target style knobs. You will have a great optic and still have money left over for ammo. Lifetime warranty not that you'll likely ever need it.
