...everyone is getting set to clean off all that cosmoline. Yesterday I gave Simple Green Max Automotive a try. $7 at Crappy Tire. It absolutley dissolves the cosmo into nothing right on contact, and after a quick rinse under the hot water the part is perfectly clean, even the small nooks and crannies. I used less than 1/2 bottle too, so it's time to clean the BBQ now :) Good product for CGN'ers.
 
My M305 was surprisingly clean when I got it. I was expecting globs of Cosmoline, but there wasn't much more than a light coating of some sort of dark oil. It only took about an hour to get everything cleaned up and reassembled.
 
Yeah, my m14 (thats what it is marked on the side) had no cosmo on it. Just some (not a lot) viscuous liquid at some spots, as well as evidence of prior firing( maybe a test fire, carbon build up at edge of chamber, carbon in barrel, very dirty black patches from pull throughs.

Just went to town with the CLP and crappy tire wheel grease.
 
"...viscuous liquid..." That'd be oil. Clean the thing before you shoot it. No need for great gobs of grease either.
