So then what do you carry on your person to compliment your rifle?

All this talk about one rifle to live, and all the other gear you need is often left out. It has been said too much emphasis is placed on the rifle, not the gear. So to compliment your rifle or shotgun, what gear do you carry on you? Not in a pack, mind you, but just on yourself. If you lose your pack, and get stuck somewhere, what would you depend on, to get chores done, maintain your firearm, or stay safe? Here's my list:

One knife on my belt, and a folding saw. Plus a folding pocket knife. A lighter and flint and steel. A compass, but no GPS. A bore snake for my rifle, and a cartridge carrier for my belt. What do you keep on you?

My Fixed Blade Buck Knife
My Folding Blade Swiss Army Ranger (backup)
Whetstone
Small Axe
Small Swede Saw
A couple of small files
Smallish Cast Iron Pot with Lid
Lots of Wire
Quality Multi-tool
Hundreds of waterproof matches
Sunglasses
Compact Binoculars
Lots of slow burning candles
Camping Water Filter
Metal Cup and Plate
1 fork/1 spoon
½ pound Black Pepper
Quality Tarp
50 feet Thin and light rope
Plant Identification Guide
Wilderness Survival Guides (Bush Craft by Mors Kochanski I think)
Small First Aid Kit/Asprin/Stiches
Telescoping Fishing Rod
Some basic Fishing lures/hooks
Quality Sleeping Bag

I’m still not sure about what gun I would carry. I am now thinking a Ruger SS Single Six with a 7 ½ barrel might be a really good call. I’m not sure if I would go with .22 LR or .22 WMR, it can fire both. It is pretty accurate at close range and allows you to have both of your hands free

I carry a Bearded axe, Multi plier on my belt, and a Russel belt knif in my fanny pack.
For field dressing I use a Puma Jagaermeister folder.

GPS, and in the old days a compass and whistles( they are still in there)
small first aid kit that includes a compression bandage, firestarting kit that includes tinder and a bic, a cotton sheet, a blaze orange vest, toilet paper for both marking trails and the other obvious, knife sharpener.
Energy bars, and some pilss like asperin
There is also snare wire and tape.
Wire cutters are on the multi plier.
Extra socks and glove liners.
There are a few other things I can't remember at this time, but fishing line and hooks can be found in there somewhere!
This stuff is carried with me on every outing , the fanny pack gets thrown in with the rifle /shotgun/bow , whichever I am using , be it for two days or two hours.

in my pockets this morning :

5 rounds of 280 ammo in one of those buttstock shell holders
small pump spray bottle of synthetic doe urine
Leica 1200 CRF laser rangefinder
Primos 'the can' bleat call
digital camera
Buckbomb muley doe in estrous scent
ELK Inc "deer stopper" deer call
some toilet paper (I needed it - too much whiskey last night)

around my neck I had my Nikon 10x42 binocs

back at the truck I got knife, saw, rope, etc (no more than a 30 min walk away)

Here's my list:

* hunting license and tags.
* my Kershaw combo-knife.
* 5 or 6 rounds of ammo in a rifle stock bullet sleeve.
* plain jane matches and toilet paper in a ziploc bag.
* my trusty compass.
* my binocs.
* water bottle.
* 20' of 5/16" rope.
Sometimes I may carry my rangefinder if the circumstances demand, but mostly not. The list may be slightly expanded to include luxury items such as a lunch, etc. if on horseback.

When I leave the truck and don't take my pack I'll always have 5 to 10 rounds of ammo, my belt knife, a BIC lighter and a water bottle.

At the very least if I get in trouble I can light a bigass fire to alert someone...

I think that's everything. I usually only take the the scent eradicator if I'm hunting with someone who can't be bothered to wash his clothes with an unscented detergent. Can't do too much about the UV brighteners they use though they should make a spray for that as well. I think I might be one of the last people alive who bothers to bring a needle and twine along though. There is another list of things I keep in my truck as well though, like a big jug of water, more rope, winch, other things to make loading and dressing a deer easier, etc....

i've always found the usgi load out to be pretty effective- 2 mag pouches, 4 mags, 2 canteens, a knife/bayonet, and a leatherman/whatever and a bunch of stuff i can't remember in the fanny pack- but i normally have the m14/305 anyway

in my jacket I have a bic lighter, lens cloth, yardage pro rangefinder, garmin rino 530 gps/radio, steiner predator 8x30 binoculars, 9 rounds of H&H, deer call

in my backpack I have flagging tape, more bic lighters in two ziploc bags, knives, leatherman, toilet paper, bottles of water, granola or chocolate bars, hunting licence and tags, synthetic doe urine, rattle bag, and a bunch of other misc BS that I forget I have in there until it gets too heavy

The most important items to have with you are your PAL and your registration certificate.If you get stopped and don't have them,the police can ruin your day in a big way.

Lessee:

Keychain: includes waterproof match safe with waterproof matches, striker, and tinder, Photon Microlight, compass, whistle, Leatherman Squirt multitool, pen, and some keys.

Knife: Spyderco Endura or a Victorinox Hunter Swiss Army Knife. If I'm going to be clearing brush, a bigger fixed blade.

Daypack: bottle of water, rope, compass, range finder rain poncho, plus an extra fleece, gloves, and hat in cold weather, emergency space blanket, registration cert for the gun (PAL lives in my wallet), toilet paper, some food (apples, beef jerky, Snickers, granola bars, that sort of thing), a Mini Maglight and a LED headlamp plus calls during deer season.

I file most of this under "exercise equipment" rather than "safety gear" :D

Some of you guys are better prepared than I am.
I generally wear a small backpack, in it a couple of knives, a leatherman, matches in a baggy, water, a couple of granola bars, rangefinder, deer call, ten rounds of ammo in a belt pouch, extra gloves and hat, rope, tags and in my pockets are a lighter and usually some halls.

Binoculars are around my neck and I use a small daypack containing: license/tags, couple sharp knives, Gerber multi-tool, folding saw, waterproof matches, large camo scarf, plastic bag w/TP, 10 rds spare ammo, 20 ft. rope, predator calls, digi-cam (now w/xtra batteries) granola bars, hard candies, candle stubs, Pelican flashlight w/xtra batteries and small compass. I'll add a rattle-box & grunt tube if I'm chasing deer and I'll pack extra gloves & touque if it's cold.

fire starter- emerg. whistle, binocs, camera, gloves, tags/ wallet, gps, compass, mora knife, leatherman.

But I always take my daypack, even for a "quick look over that ridge". Cause a 5 minute recon always seems to turn into a 1 or 2 hour stalk.
